About 525 members of United Steelworkers Local 1605 walked out at Blaw-Knox Ellwood City plant at midnight after failed wage and benefit negotiations in a two year contract open on a re opener clause. The stoppage joins 5500 other Blaw Knox workers across several plants.

Four Teachers Fall Short Signing New Castle Contracts
Four of 377 New Castle Area teachers did not return signed contracts by the November 5 deadline set at last month’s meeting. The new pact adds 10 non instructional work days to a 180 day year with a 162,076 dollar state subsidy raises for teachers. The board may require only two added days this year and suggests teachers may not have to work the 10 extra days. Superintendent Dr John E Mathews noted non signers would be paid without raises, the increase for most teachers being 405 dollars.
