Republican Arlen Specter defeats Democrat Bob Edgar by about 450000 votes securing 57 percent to 43 percent with broad county support including Philadelphia and Pittsburgh. Specter vows to keep an independent voice in Congress while focusing on jobs and resisting foreign imports impacting Pennsylvania steel. Edgar concedes but remains hopeful.
Lawrence County reported a 62.5 percent turnout in yesterday's general election. Of 51,835 registered voters, 32,398 cast ballots, below the 1978 governor race and the four years ago turnout, which reached 66.8 and 72.6 percent respectively.
Democrat Frank LaGrotta defeats Republican Jim Gerlach 9717 to 8581 to fill the Lawrence County district seat. Thornburgh attended the race as Republicans spent heavily. LaGrotta wins Mercer and Beaver county portions, carrying Ellwood City county sections by smaller margins.
