New Castle Mayor Anthony Mastrangelo edged opponent Joseph Scrim by 62 votes to secure a third term. Mastrangelo led by five votes before absentee ballots were counted and finished with 1 954 to 1 892.
Judge-elect David H. Acker, a Republican, won the Lawrence County Common Pleas Court race with unofficial 10,700 votes, 54 percent, against Democrat Melissa A. Amodie who had 9,079 votes and 45.9 percent. Acker said the real work starts and thanked supporters from all parties.
Lawrence County Commissioner Steve Craig, a Democratic incumbent, was re-elected to four more years with 8 328 votes amid clear skies and a personal milestone as his daughter Maddie turned 18 and could vote for the first time. Republican Dan Vogler led with 9 646 votes and Bob Del Signore received 8 112, while Democrat Tim Fulkerson had 7 937 and Independent Ralph R Sheen Jr 2 261.
Shenango Area School District voters reject a proposed $44.5 million plan to build a new elementary school and auxiliary gym. No votes total 1,857 (69 percent) while 819 votes favor the measure, which would have raised district debt and increased property taxes by 4.16 mills over four years. Board president Al Burick noted no plans existed if defeated.
Helen Morgan was elected to a ninth term as Lawrence County Prothonotary on Tuesday, defeating Republican challenger Christopher Burrelli. Morgan secured 11,115 votes or 58.01 percent to Burrelli's 8,029 or 41.9 percent, with Morgan expressing gratitude for voter confidence.
