Nasty odor haunts New Castle area prompting DEP talks
Assistant fire chief Mike Kobbe said the fire department would meet with the state Department of Environmental Protection to address a putrid smell detected Oct. 27. The odor spread through New Castle Union and North Beaver townships and drew hundreds of comments on the police Facebook page. Some residents reported it in Neshannock Township. The smell was described as cat urine and potatoes and strong enough to irritate the mucus membranes. DEP officials visited the county last week to assist in the investigation.
