Frank Phillips of Zambelli Fireworks Manufacturing Co on Nashua Harbor Road is seen mixing flash used in fireworks. Phillips, also a shooter, is among several workers helping produce at the oldest fireworks company in New Castle.

IRA chiefs fled to two cars after gunmen boarded, a bogus American filmmaker named Leonard linked to the operation. Premier Cosgrave urged an emergency cabinet session amid a nationwide manhunt.
Senator William B Saxbe of Ohio was chosen by President Nixon to be the new attorney general. The first term Republican had previously criticized Nixon over the Hanoi bombing and had said he would not seek reelection.
The White House disclosed two Nixon Mitchell April and June 20 1972 conversations may not have been taped triggering claims the remaining tapes are complete and untampered The administration faced questions on why a home extension line could not be recorded and whether a malfunction erased key discussions about Watergate fallout.
