Heavy air assault by Yak fighters targets U S troops as ground clash with Communist tanks ends with four enemy planes destroyed and twelve tanks down in two days. Reporter L F Ferrero notes surprise moment and quick counteraction by F-51s during the engagement toward the border region.
October totals reveal 59 boys and 59 girls born at Jameson Memorial Hospital. Mayor Haven and ex mayor Mayne toured the rural district this morning in a bird and rabbit hunt tradition. Albizu Campos held in protective custody as authorities seek to prevent further nationalist actions. The death toll rose to 32 with a barber killed in San Juan and estimates suggest up to 51 may die. Guardsmen seized Jayuya and routed about 300 Nationalists using tanks planes and bazookas.

The proclamation drew vast crowds, with 35 cardinals, 600 bishops, and about a million pilgrims, as Italy declared a national holiday for All Saints Day. The ceremony filled St. Peter's Square and basilica with worshippers across Rome.
Detroit police report 29 year old John D Edmunds confessed to strangling his 59 year old widow mother Minerva Edmunds after she refused to fund his scheme of bad checks across five states. The body was found in her basement six days after her death. Edmunds surrendered at a Saginaw police station after a nationwide search.
The five members of the subversive activities control board take oaths of office in Chief Justice Bolitha Laws’ Washington courtroom and plan their first session. Seth Richardson will resign as loyalty review board chief before his oath. Also on the board are Charles Lafollette Peter Brown Kathryn McHale and other appointees.
Washington November 1 The navy announced a policy to keep reservists on duty at least until next July and to call up 5,000 more reservists monthly indefinitely. Releasing 5,000 already called up monthly starts next October. The plan relies on a 1,000,000-man reserve to sustain 579,000 regulars by year end with no direct draft use, while army drafts could add up to 100,000 per month.
French army HQ announced the recapture of Dinhlap, a northern Indo-Chinese town, 25 miles southeast of Langson, as Viet Minh resistance slackened. The report said Viet Minh activities in the Lackay area were confined to patrols on the Red River’s right bank south of Lackay. The Dinhlap defense had been unusually weak before the recapture.
George Bernard Shaw, the Irish born playwright aged 94, has been unconscious for over 12 hours and clings to life by a thread. A close source says this is the finish as Shaw shows no change following a mid afternoon medical update.

Chinese Communist forces are reported to have entered North Korean lines and jet aircraft of undetermined nationality attacked, triggering questions about Moscow and Beijing strategies and a winter campaign near the Yalu river.

Mrs. Johanna Anstead, 77, of 709 Fourth Avenue Patton, Pa., died at Jameson Memorial Hospital from injuries suffered in a July 2 1950 automobile collision on Route 422 at the Harbor. She was a passenger in a car driven by Paul R. Jones of Spangler Pa., en route east on Route 422.
The North Atlantic council deputies faced a stalemate over German rearmament as defense ministers failed to agree on a supreme Western Europe command or the use of West German troops. A French plan to sharply limit German forces drew heavy debate after three days of talks.
