Thousands woke to mild quake shocks across Pennsylvania with no damage. The University of Pittsburgh seismograph recorded shocks starting at 1 04 a m in Pittsburgh, lasting 12 minutes with minor disturbances for an hour. Temblors moved northeast from the western part of the state, sparking alarm in many communities.
Three distinct earthquakes rattled the eastern seaboard from Montreal to Baltimore in the early hours. Minor damage reported and no injuries found as vibrations registered around 1.05 to 1.07 am. Skyscrapers in lower Manhattan were largely unaware until contacted by newspapers.
Lloyds of England adds a career insurance department. Miss Joy Hodges, formerly of Des Moines, is the first client. She holds a $250,000 accident and life policy with a rider guaranteeing $125,000 earnings over three years. The Hollywood contract could net $271,000, but coverage activates only if earnings drop below $125,000.

A special train with 90 World War veterans from Fort Harrison left Helena for Walla Walla and Roseburg to escape after a strong earthquake. Two men died in Helena on Thursday when scaffolding collapsed during repair work at Kessler Brewery and several were hospitalized.
Albany reports state geologists Dr. D. H. Newland and Dr. Benjamin Ross attributing the quake to ancient faults in the region. They cite Logan's fault and fissures through upstate New York, noting the tremor lasted about 54 seconds with low immediate danger of recurrence.
More than 10 000 people gathered for the South Side Hallowe'en celebration and parade sponsored by local merchants. Grand Marshal Ivor V. Davis led a large procession from Hamilton street and East Long avenue, with bands, mummers, and bright flares to close the event.
Pennsylvania plans a $14 million airport program to place the state on the national air map and create relief jobs. Edward N. Jones says the project, drafted by Major John P. Morris, would fund 16 new municipal airports and modernize 62 more, with $1.09 million locally raised. The proposal, approved by the Commerce Department, is now with WPA administrator Harry L. Mercer, November 1 Arthur Urey 32 of Sandy Lake died at Mercer hospital from a self inflicted shotgun blast in the district's first hunting accident. He was hunting near Sandy Lake when the trigger caught on his clothing as he stepped over a log, the shot struck his abdomen. His brother James heard his screams and rushed to help.
The opening of the small game season drew crowds of Pennsylvanians, with more than half a million holding licenses for rabbits squirrels and game birds. Rain and clouds dampened plans across the eastern and western regions though disciplined hunters with dogs pressed on.
State police freed Harry Stoner of Pittsburgh after an artist's sketch linked to the slain Frank Blumquist case was found not to match him. Stoner and two other men were detained with possible auto theft suspects at Butler and Zelienople while identifications were pursued.

Morris Cox of West Washington street extension found a ring with a stone setting inside a carrot while washing produce. The four inch carrot grew through the ring, making the top resemble a baby’s head. The ring’s authenticity remains uncertain but the discovery is hailed as a remarkable nature story.

Forty eight nations join in economic sanctions the harshest move yet against Italy. The League of Nations sanctions committee schedules formal application for November 15 with a one month trial to December 15. Germany expected to back neutrality. United States pledged to restraint.
Mr. and Mrs. Isaac E Anwyl and Miss Lottie Nicklin return from a southern motor trip to Chattanooga Tennessee where a car tag reading Welcome Visitor is found. The tag from the Chattanooga Police Department invites visitors to park freely but warns motorists not to use the tag improperly or in safety zones.
