United Press reports weekend fatalities for the Memorial Day period from Friday evening to Monday midnight. The count shows 365 traffic deaths, 135 drownings, 11 plane crash deaths, and 52 in other mishaps, totaling 563 deaths.
United Press tally from Friday 6 P M to Monday midnight reports 539 holiday deaths nationwide including 132 drownings and 11 plane crashes. California led with 27 fatalities, followed by Ohio and Texas. National Safety Council president Ned H Dearborn warned the toll could exceed last year’s 364 and reach about 375 as final counts come in.
Memorial Day conditions were cool, deterring outdoor picnics and swimming events. Cemeteries across Lawrence County showed veterans’ graves marked with many flags. Strawberries were sold from a roadside stand, rhododendrons bloomed, and Bermuda shorts drew attention in New Castle as a man in white shirt and dark shorts passed by. The Farmers Almanac predicts this weather through August 1, a claim the writer doubts.
Mostly sunny in the west and partly cloudy in the east with a high in the 62 to 70 range. Tonight will be fair and cool with a low around 44 to 48. Wednesday looks sunny and warmer.

Surgeon General Scheele awaits a safety report from a committee including Dr Salk to certify the new supplies. The Senate committee prepares a bill for standby federal controls and funding to inoculate low income children. AMA says safeguards are in place and the program will move ahead after rechecking manufacturing procedures following recent cases.
Allentown Pennsylvania reports a freak storm with winds 55 to 69 mph causing up to 100000 dollars in damage. A garden shop wall was blown down at a department store building with estimated twenty thousand dollars damage. Trees failed, power lines fell and several plate glass windows were smashed with one minor injury.
Rev Francis M. McCarter of St Mary church New Castle was named a monsignor along with 14 other Pittsburgh diocese priests at St Pauls Cathedral in a Sunday ceremony attended by about 2100 people. Bishop John F Dearden presided as 15 new monsignori were formally invested.
In downtown Dayton, a gunman shot and killed a grocer identified as George Sawaya and wounded seven others, including bank vice president William Sherman and secretary Frieda Kramer, before a policeman fatally subdued him after the attack at Third National Bank and Winter National Bank.

Detroit The CIO United Auto Workers union proposes a prosperity partnership package or guaranteed annual wage for 140000 Ford employees. Walter Reuther asks Ford to respond at the bargaining table as talks face a June 2 strike deadline. Ford plans full consideration before replying.
