Alex Silverman, who co ran a chain of hovels with Saul Leff in New Castle and nearby cities, died Sunday from pleurisy at Mercy Hospital Pittsburgh after a 10 day illness. His body was laid to rest this afternoon. Earlier in life he worked as a newsboy among hustling paper sellers.
Six robbers armed with sawed off shotguns raided an New York Actors Club at May 28. In a moment eighty patrons scattered as two taxi drivers were used as human shields. Jewelry and cash totaling $10,000 taken and two drivers wounded. One victim, Louis Nishkin, 33, of Brook, shot and dying at Bellevue hospital.
Margaret Cunningham, four, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Benjamin Cunningham, was killed when the Studebaker carrying her mother and others toppled on a wet concrete road near the Harmony church area while passing a large truck. Her brother Earl and Mrs. Hawks survived injuries as Mrs. Cunningham and Mrs. Hawks were in the rear seat. Coroner J. P. Caldwell investigates as the scene is described near the Willham Woellhausen home. the accident occurred shortly after 10 this morning.
Mrs Susie McConnell Robinson aged 37 wife of Jesse H Robinson of Pulaski township died Sunday at Shenango Valley hospital after her clothing caught fire while lighting a kitchen stove with kerosene causing an explosion. Survived by husband six children two sisters three brothers and mother, with funeral Tuesday May 29 at 2 p.m. at Hulbert Robinson’s home and burial in Neshannock cemetery.
