City Plumbing Inspector Appointment Shifted to Council

City Solicitor James A. Gardner issued a written opinion asserting the council holds the power to appoint a city plumbing inspector, not the mayor. Mayor Tyler had named a plumbing inspector and board member, but the council took no action. An ordinance to provide for the inspector's appointment and duties was introduced and referred to the committee of the whole.

May Day Labor Rally Planned at Cascade Park

Arrangements are finished for a May day labor rally at Cascade park tomorrow with a large anticipated crowd. The program features speakers James H. Maurer W G Lees and Jack Britt Gearity plus a Firemen and Engineers representative. Afternoon starts 2 30 pm and evening at 8 00 pm. Mayor Tyler notes T J McNamara of Buffalo will attend as vice president of the Brotherhood.

Preparing Cases for June Term of Court

District Attorney Clyde W. Riley and County Detective W. H. Dunlap prep cases and sub poena witnesses for the June term grand jury. The docket will be shorter than March term with Roy Crawford among principal defendants for assault on Miss Alvira Rodgers of Plaingrove township. Crawford remains jailed after failing to post $1,000 bail. Several speakeasy cases reduced due to guilty pleas.

Township supervisors Wesley Gormley E G Reiber and John A Stankard thank volunteers for outstanding road work on roads day. Gormley notes work exceeded expectations and a gift of ice cream from an English factory was appreciated. Farmers wives along Harlansburg road prepared dinners for workers.

U S Cruiser North Carolina Aground near Alexandria

Captain Oman reported the U S cruiser North Carolina is aground but unharmed inside the outer harbor of Alexandria Egypt. The ship cannot move today as a dredge works and it will serve as auxiliary to hydroplanes at Pensacola. Des Moines arrived to relieve the North Carolina and is heading to the Mediterranean.

Two Pennsylvan ia Boys Recovered in Ellwood Detention Case

Parole Officer Bill Smith captured William Clements and George Ritchie near Ellwood City after they disappeared from home Wednesday evening. The youths had stolen T. J. Stevenson’s horse and buggy and another rig. They were lodged in New Castle Juvenile Detention, refusing to reveal where they traveled. Stevenson’s rig was returned.

Closing Session of Beaver Baptist Convention in Reynolds Street church

The Beaver Baptist association Bible school and Young Peoples' society hold the closing session at Emmanuel Baptist church Reynolds Street. Officers will be elected and Attorney C H Akens to speak. Dr Russell of Philadelphia spoke on Making America Christian and several addresses followed this morning. Delegates from Beaver valley churches fill the sessions.

Robert J. Robison through attorney 8S. J. Callahan has filed facias for a mechanic's lien against J. Y. Miller Carl Turner and Clyde A. Bach owners of a Third ward house where Robison furnished plastering materials and labor. The lien amount covers the plastering work.

Jas A Gardner to Speak at Hillsville Memorial Day

James A. Gardner city solicitor of New Castle will be the orator at Hillsville Memorial Day exercises. Dr W B Campbell will read Gettysburg Address. The program includes committees for arrangements music grave decoration automobiles and more with a 10 am assembly at the public school grounds and a march to the cemetery and Baptist church. An extension of the municipal conduit is underway in Cochran way to reach the Postal Telegram building.

British Freighter Argyllshire Torpedoed Off Scilly Isles

The British liner Argyllshire, 10 392 tons and among the era’s largest freighters, was torpedoed by a German submarine off the Scilly Islands yesterday. Early reports said she sent S O S calls and was sinking, but agents for Scottishshire line later said she reached port after being taken over by the Admiralty for naval service when torpedoed.

Executive Committee on Good Roads Meets

A morning meeting of the Good Roads Day association’s executive committee was held at the courthouse to audit accounts and arrange settlements. County Treasurer F L Bigham reported sufficient funds to cover expenses with a small balance, and about $450 in cash was contributed toward the movement.

Settlement Reached With Railroad Over Moravia Roadbed Fills

County Commissioner R. M. Leslie and Mrs. Sarah Paden signed settlements with the Pennsylvania Railroad P Y A branch for damages to their properties caused by fills in the Moravia roadbed. Leslie received 1500 dollars and Mrs. Paden 1000 dollars.

Italy's Four Armies Move In Concert On Front

Italian Lieutenant Count Luigi Cadorna opened a campaign against Austria with five operations on a sixty mile front. Four Italian armies crossed Friuli and sea actions began in the Adriatic as Porto Busco was attacked. Corrada fortress fell after a storm assault, enabling Italian artillery and aircraft to bombard Austrian works.

Surety of the Peace Charge Involving Neil Mooney

Neil Mooney is charged with a surety of the peace offense by Albert Huich in Alderman J. H. Gross's office. He allegedly menaced Huich's wife on Wednesday night and later trespassed at the Greer plant, attacking Huich at work around 3 AM. Mooney reportedly blames Huich for his discharge.

The bankrupt stock of Edgar Phillips, North Mill Street tailor, was sold this morning at bankrupt sale to Ats torney D. N. Keast who represented a client. The stock brought 470 dollars and will pay only a small percentage of the indebtedness.
