Police last night checked eight to ten autos for rear lights as required. Otto Grover of Rividelivery faces a $10 fine for repeated offenses. Flooded Southside openings were cleaned but remained in poor condition after last night’s storm.
J W Cunningham was re elected captain of Troop F at an armory hall meeting last night. His re election signals high esteem for his leadership within the troop.
Captain Cunningham has completed twelve years of military service. He first enlisted in Company B, 16th P V I during the Spanish American war and served in Porto Rico. He was commissioned by President McKinley as captain of Company L, 42nd U.S. volunteers for the Philippines. After two years he returned home and was appointed captain of Troop F by the governor. Troop F was inspected last night by Major Taggart of Sunbury and gave a creditable showing.
Justice of the Peace Aiken reserved his decision for one week after hearing nine superintendents and firemen charged with Sunday work at Hillsville quarries. District Attorney Riley and Attorney W. D. Wallace represented the commonwealth and defendants. The defense argued the shift and loading work was necessary to meet furnace demand, while the commonwealth urged weekday completion.
Andrew Korfer and his family have moved from Moravia Street to South Mill Street, settling in a new residence.

Caravassos A C defeated the Hunter Carnival baseball nine by 5 to 1 yesterday afternoon at Cascade ball park. The game lasted three innings with the local squad proving faster and more defensive than the carnival nine.

Detroit May 28 Five fire companies battled a basement and first floor blaze at the Union depot. Firemen and inmates trapped in the detention pen were rescued as smoke overwhelmed responders. Loss estimated at 100000 dollars with extensive damage and hospitalizations among firefighters.

City Clerk C Ed Brown says no notice to close the referendum petition has been received yet. Several more signatures were added today while Brown has not begun verifying voter names. The council has not moved to repeal the underlying law.

County Detective W. H. Dunlap arrested three men and two women in Ellwood City on charges of selling liquor without a license. The detainees Car men Pont Jerry Ahun Fred Inno cent e Natalia Guiseppe and Mary Faela appeared before Squire S. Y. Douds and were jailed in default of 800 bail each pending Friday hearing. Police secured considerable liquor during the operation.
Deputy State Factory Inspector J. R. Patterson of Beaver Falls spent the day in the city inspecting buildings and noting several changes. He reported conditions are good and recommended a number of improvements.
