The Education Department says elementary enrollments will grow from 32.4 million in 1988-89 to 34.8 million in 1993, a 6 percent rise, while high school numbers dip to 12.6 million in 1990 before climbing to 13.2 million by 1993. Public and private schools both expand, with total enrollment up by 2.5 million.
President Bush opened talks with Prime Minister Ciriaco De Mita in Rome to win Italian support on short range nuclear missiles in Europe. The meeting at Villa Madama preceded Vatican talks with John Paul II and prep for NATO summit in Brussels.
The health column Speaking of your health by Drs. Lester Coleman and Steven A. Davis is discontinued after more than 25 years. A new daily comic page feature Ask Dr Lamb by Dr Lawrence E Lamb replaces it. The change appears in the current issue as schools year ends and educators pursue summer activities.
The Pennsylvania Higher Education Assistance Agency board approved covering the legal costs for executive director Kenneth Reeder, amid his 12 count federal indictment for conspiracy, extortion, bribery, and racketeering tied to a nearly 1.8 million Gabler contract. Reeder pled not guilty and remains on leave. Attorney General Ernie Preate Jr. voiced concerns about legality and terms.
The New Castle News will not publish on Monday for Memorial Day and resumes Tuesday. Government offices, banks, post offices, and branches will close. Post Office window service ends, box service runs on holiday schedule at main and downtown offices. Delivery limited to special delivery and express mail with one collection. Public Library also closed Monday and reopens Tuesday at 8:30 a.m.
Commissioners invite proposals from nursing home marketing specialists by June 5 to sell Hill View Manor. The chosen firm will assemble a bid package, handle marketing and sale negotiations, and liaise with state welfare and health departments. Process could take two months.
