Union residents again pressed for deeper cuts as the Union Area Joint School Board reduced the proposed budget by about 1 1/2 percent. The revised budget stands at 811 241 dollars and is set for adoption at the board meeting June 1 at 7 30 p.m.
The Pennsylvania Senate took up 18.5 million dollars in House approved appropriations including 8 million for the Industrial Redevelopment Authority and 8 million for housing redevelopment. other bills allocate funds for flood control, county development, and municipal retirement costs. The chamber also sent 15 million in housekeeping measures to the governor, plus open meetings for the game commission and a loyalty oath bill for write-in primary candidates. A related budget debate at a school board meeting highlighted calls to cut fat from salaries and boost science and basics amid fiscal strain.
Harrisburg, UPI. Republican State Chairman George S. Bloom charged House Democrats sought to intimidate the press and suppress unfavorable news. The accusation followed a floor debate with editorials attacking lawmakers’ $3,000 annual expense allowance, a topic lawmakers privately resented. Bloom called the move part of national efforts to suppress criticism.
A Navy F4H8 Phantom trio broke transcontinental speed in tests from Los Angeles to Brooklyn. The first flight lasted 3 hours 3 minutes, a later run achieved 2 hours 57 minutes, and the final hop set 2 hours 47 minutes 17 seconds earning Lt Richard F. Gordon and Lt Robbie R. Young the Radix Trophy with an average 869.7 mph. All flights surpassed the sound barrier, with refueling flights at 30,000 feet.
Harrisburg report outlines a Senate bill to overhaul the State Council of Education into a stronger policy making body within the Public Instruction Department. Size rises from nine to 15 with five members serving on a higher education sub committee. Authors include Democrats Hays Seyler Silver and Kalman and Republicans Stroup Wagner Shafer Crawford.

New Castle will host an area wide industrial development meeting on Wednesday at 6:30 p.m. at the New Castle Country Club. Speakers include Newton Griffiths, director of the Bureau of Industrial Development, and Paul Dingledy of Pennsylvania Power Co. The event is sponsored by local development groups and will include state officials and county leaders.
Three people were killed and two others critically injured in a head-on two car crash on Route 924 near Hazleton Pennsylvania. State Police identified victims as John Koval James M Fichter Jr Marlene Sterling Marion Fleva and Norman Favers. Fichter reportedly lost control veering into oncoming traffic.
Billy Graham spokesman denied any offer to pay ex-convict Mickey Cohen to convert to Christianity. Red Skelton testified Cohen claimed Graham offered 25 000 to convert and 15 000 to attend a meeting. Grady Wilson supported the denial saying Graham has never paid anyone for conversion.

Police in Jackson detain 27 Freedom Riders from Alabama for disorderly conduct and disobeying an officer. Charges of inciting to riot are dropped as James Farmer of CORE and others await swift trials in a renovated downtown jail.
