American and Australian air crews destroyed or damaged about 25 Japanese planes in three heavy raids on enemy bases north of Australia. The heaviest loss occurred at Vunakanau airfield near Rabaul, where 20 planes were parked and multiple direct hits set fires.
The United Mine Workers policy committee and international executive board began a three day meeting in Washington May 25 to address paid vacations for miners or extra compensation for uninterrupted production. The session may widen tension between UMW Chief John L. Lewis and Philip Murray, UMW vice president and head of the Coal Workers. Murray, elected president of the United Steel Workers, will draw $20,000 from the steel union and $18,000 from the miners’ union but hopes to remain at the UMW without pay until his term ends next April.
