Sechan confident of OK for landfill plan

Robert C. Sechan Jr. seeks state approval for a 36 acre hazardous waste landfill in Muddy Creek and Slippery Rock townships, planned near Slippery Rock Creek. He claims the design is the best in Pennsylvania and expects a public review and hearing next fall, amid strong regional opposition from downstream communities relying on local water sources.

Debt limit rise inches through House amid deadline pressure

The House approved a 30 billion dollar increase to the federal debt ceiling, moving it to 1.52 trillion but sending the measure to the Senate. Treasury Secretary Regan warned that without action Social Security checks could bounce and securities default risk grows. The vote, 211 to 198, follows a similarly styled vote rejected earlier. Senate action may extend only to June 22, while Regan warned of possible defaults and delayed payments if lawmakers fail to act. In other news, David Martin Allen of Wayne Township was found guilty of first degree murder in Clarion County and sentenced to life, for the killing of Larry Feil in Shenango Township.

Conversion of old library to office complex begins early June

New Castle real estate investors plan to convert the old New Castle Public Library into a commercial and office facility with about eight offices. The project costs 812000, financed by a Revenue Bond, two bank loans, and owner investment, and should be completed by year end with interiors and furnishings installed.
