Sixty-Two Men Trapped in U.S. Submarine Sculpia
PORTSMOUTH N H May 23 Sixty two men were trapped this afternoon in the United States submarine Squalus off Isle of Shoals in 243 feet of water. The trapped include six officers and crew, navy aid workers, and one electrician. The submarine left the yard this morning for a routine test and submerged about 12 miles from the mainland near the Isle of Shoals at 8 50 a m EDT. This afternoon it did not return to base and was unreported prompting a rescue search. The officers found the hull box with telephone wire and contacted the surface. the near crew struggled but the submarine remained submerged as the rescue effort continued.
