House approves final Pa 60 link toll road plan

The Pennsylvania House approved a toll road expansion package, directing the Turnpike Commission to build the Beaver Valley Expressway and other routes while rejecting tolls on Interstate 70 and 80. Mohawk District Approves 11-Mill Tax Hike in Budget

Mohawk Area School Board approved the 1984 85 budget at 6 3 on a 6 3 vote totaling 6 234 226 including an 11 mill tax increase bringing total to 65 mills The move follows previous mill hikes and a nearly 473 113 revenue loss from four areas Superintendent Retort notes the reserve fund drop from 177 591 to 8 681 and a projected 310 047 budget shortfall despite similar expenditures next year The board cited tax collection and property assessment declines as key factors with Shenango having a 10 mill hike last week and Mohawk remaining the only district not increasing next year’s budget

Rossi resigns as manager of City Parking Authority

Rita Rossi has resigned as manager of the City Parking Authority effective June 1 with Donald E. Pallerino to assume duties. Pallerino, a Mahoningtown native, will earn 16000 dollars annually plus benefits. Rossi, in office since October 1980 following Gerald Morris, led bookkeeping and ticket operations and oversaw garage maintenance.

Reagan signs bill to curb kiddie porn nationwide

President Reagan approved a law cracking down on distribution of child pornography and announced a new national commission to study pornography’s societal effects. The bill tightens penalties, allows court supervised wiretaps, bans sale and exchange, and tightens the Child Protection Act following a 1982 Supreme Court ruling.

Saudi king approves $1 billion air defense system

King Fahd approved a $1 billion air defense system and other mobilization steps to deter foreign attacks. The plan includes a command and control network and Western help with costs. Officials linked the move to threats from Iranian strikes on Arab oil tankers amid the Iran Iraq war.
