Washington reports the Navy says Attu village was completely destroyed except for a church and one other building. Lightning fighters bombed Chichagof Harbor area setting a fuel depot ablaze as the Attu Island battle enters its final phase.
Washington May 22 crack American troops pressed to finish off remnant Japanese forces on Attu Island as U S warships patrolled surrounding waters for possible evacuation attempts. Navy officials said bad weather hindered final liquidation but the 12 day campaign was a success with enemy trapped near Attu village. Secretary Knox noted sea approaches were under U S control.
Louis G Feldman chief enforcement officer for the Pittsburgh CPA announced that scores of gasoline ration books were confiscated after a new government edict against pleasure driving. City police aided federal agents in an intensified campaign to rid the streets of pleasure drivers.
Soviet artillery pounded German positions from the Caucasus to Leningrad as part of a campaign to blunt a summer offensive. Across multiple fronts, blockhouses and tanks were destroyed, snipers claimed numerous German casualties, and a German torpedo boat and a patrol ship were sunk by the Soviet navy and air force.

The 24 hour period ending at 9 am reports a maximum of 65 and minimum of 43 degrees with trace precipitation and a river stage of 9.5 feet. For the corresponding date last year the max was 59 and the min 52 with precipitation of .79.
Staff correspondent reports that the French protectorate of Tunisia was handed to French control by General Eisenhower. Bible school meets at 9 30 a m with Lamoree speaking at 10 a m and Dr Bennett addressing at 11 a m on Our Contribution to Our Brotherhood.
In a U N communique Gen Douglas MacArthur reported an intensified air war in the southwest Pacific. Allied forces claimed 18 Japanese aircraft destroyed and 13 landing barges damaged or destroyed as B 17s and B 25s pressed attacks on New Britain and targets at Rabaul despite heavy anti aircraft fire and searchlight defenses.
John J. Sutton Jr. who had been reported missing by his parents, Mr and Mrs John J Sutton of East Wallace Avenue, was located in Wooster Ohio after several days.
The giant government-owned Wel don Springs explosive plant valued at 35 million dollars in Missouri stood idle today as flood waters from the Mississippi and Missouri rivers swelled, disrupting home front production.
Ottawa May 22 The Royal Canadian Air Force will nearly double in size this year to counter rising Nazi U-boat activity in the western Atlantic. Air Minister Charles Powers pledged the expansion today.
Lawrence county selectees called up for examination next week will get a two week furlough instead of the usual one week. The order, effective Monday and issued by Lieut. Col. G. H. Hare JADG, acts as Pennsylvania Selective Service director. Effective May 24 at the Pittsburgh induction center the leave period between exam date and reporting to the reception center extends from seven to 14 days through July 1, with possible extension to 21 days after that as determined by Third Service Command headquarters. If exams were in Erie this month the furlough would be seven days, Erie center extension not effective until June 21.
The Office of Price Administration announced canning sugar ration stamps 15 and 16 will be valid from May 24 to October 31. Each person may obtain five pounds, with up to 25 pounds per person through registration. Rural schools have registered. New Castle will register next week. housewives should bring sugar ration books and a needs statement.
British Mosquito bombers hit Berlin for the third straight night as RAF aircraft bombed railway lines in France and attacked a convoy in the English Channel. The operations marked the 67th raid on Berlin and left five bombers and one fighter lost.
Washington May 22 The War Labor Board began studying the three man panel report on the coal strike dispute amid time pressure with the extended truce ending in nine days. The board planned daily sessions likely through next week, aiming for a decision by midweek. The panel report offered no settlement recommendations but provided some support for United Mine Workers chief John L Lewis and his demand for a wage increase for about 540000 miners after investigating the clash between UMW and operators.
Washington May 22 The A F L terminated all efforts to negotiate peace with the CIO amid John L Lewis leading 540 000 miners back into the federation. The AFL executive council will draft a statement blaming the CIO and insist CIO unions return to AFL one by one under AFL terms.
Mary Mackey Oberg aged 72 of Ellwood City is recorded dead. Andrew O McKissick aged 64 of Euclid Pennsylvania is noted in the death notices.
Salvaged turbines and propeller shafts from the Pearl Harbor victim Downes are incorporated into the hull of the new Downes destroyer. The vessel is shown at its launching at Mare Island Navy Yard in San Francisco with an official U S Navy photograph.
Sixty one persons receive degrees this afternoon at Westminster College's 89th commencement in New Wilmington. Fifty eight seniors get degrees and three receive honorary degrees by Dr. Robert F Galbreath. The day includes a May Queen coronation Ruth Galbreath, a band concert, and remarks by Judge W Walter Braham.
The OPA announced price ceilings will extend tomorrow from small independents to all stories in 130 plus metropolitan areas. Local ceilings will vary by community for chain outlets and supermarkets with separate lists to cover coffee milk bread butter eggs poultry flour and other staples.
American medium bombers reported destroying or damaging 14 Japanese fighters attempting to flee after bombing workshops at Chauk in Burma. The official communique said five fighters were definitely destroyed, three probable, and six damaged. one American bomber was lost.

Allied air forces report 86 enemy planes destroyed in recent hours raising three day total to 272. The victories include 19 German and Italian aircraft in air battles and 67 more on the ground during sweeps over Sicily Sardinia and Pantelleria.
Detroit May 22 An estimated 600000 man hours in tank gun and bomber parts production were lost due to Chrysler Corporation strikes as only a few of about 28000 workers heeded union leaders back to work calls. War Labor Board chairman Dr Edwin A Witte expressed confidence the walkout is ending and expected full production to resume Monday.
The Pittsburgh Office of Naval Officer Procurement announces the enlistment of Miss Jean Elizabeth Brown of 18 North Mulberry Street in the U S Navy Women Accepted for Volunteer Emergency Service. She previously worked as a cup turner at Shenango Pottery and will soon begin her indoctrination course.
Nine Lawrence county high schools plan baccalaureate services on Sunday May 23. Speakers include Rev. Sidney K. Bliss and Rev. J Cal Vinh Rose with addresses at Shenango New Wilmington and East Brook. Other speakers are Rev. Everett Spring Bessemer Rev. Raymond M. Touvell Rev. J Greer Bingham and Rev. Edward T. Tuten for Plaingrove Haralnsburg and Union Wampum Bessemer East Brook and Union schools.
