German counter assaults near Kharkov repulsed with heavy losses, 370 enemy soldiers killed in one sector. Izvestia reports Timoshenko offensive continuing as Russians press forward amid fierce night battles on Kharkov front and Kerch peninsula fighting.
London May 22 Sir Alan Brooke Chief of Britain's Imperial General Staff after visiting the American Expeditionary forces in Northern Ireland said an opportunity for United States troops to see action will come soon. He praised the high standard of troops and weapons in the large convoy that reached Europe last week and noted the 14 ton American tanks under Lieut Dwight S Warner of Monticello. He observed an infantry battalion and a live mortar demonstration during combat training.
In Australia on May 22 United Nations forces under General Douglas MacArthur sank a Kako class cruiser and two freighters, plus eight war planes, in a series of naval and air attacks. Submarines under Vice Admiral Herbert F. Leary's command sunk the cruiser and two freighters, marking a notable American naval success amid the Coral Sea conflict.

The Navy Construction Battalion will relocate to Cunningham Park at the New Castle N Y A Resident Center Monday morning May 25. Sailors will works on N Y A grounds and in shops under N Y A supervision and be under Navy officers. A military guard will surround the center during their stay to ensure training and facility completion.

Heaton jailed and Shepherd died en route to hospital shortly after the shooting.
New Castle retailers voted to keep stores open one evening a week starting June 1 for mill workers. Monday hours will be 12 30 p m to 9 p m with other weeknights closing at 5 30 p m and Saturdays at 6 p m. The move follows workers on the production line.
