Oregon voters battle over Dewey and Stassen as the GOP primary determines 12 state delegates and tests presidential hopes. Predictions show a tight race with high turnout expected among 322,490 Republicans and 302,546 Democrats before 8 p.m. PST.

Soviet Deputy Foreign Minister Yakov Malik assumed the post as chief Soviet delegate to the United Nations. He arrived aboard the Queen Mary and gave no official comments. Malik has previously served as wartime ambassador to Japan and worked in Moscow's foreign ministry press office.
The United States warned Arab states not to discriminate against holders of American passports after Lebanon expelled 40 American Jews from the U S vessel Marine Corp. The State Department said it would view such actions seriously and consider responses.
Frank Grazik aged 67 lived on the Bessemer Lime Stone and Cement Company property. He received second degree burns while attempting to extinguish a blaze that destroyed his two room house and belongings valued around 500 dollars. He was treated at Jameson Memorial hospital at 1 am.
Los Angeles May 21 A 24 year old ex sailor Robert Hansen confessed killer faces a preliminary hearing next Wednesday for the murder of his employers Mr and Mrs Ralph Dirksen. He said he chopped off their heads and hands and disposed of the bodies in the Mojave desert during the mutilation slayings in Los Angeles.
A Soviet Yak-9 fighter, running low on fuel, made a forced landing near Taejon in American-occupied Korea. Pilot Ivan Osmakov set the craft on fire, was seized by locals, then held until U S forces arrived. He claimed Red Army captain rank and said he mistook the Ongjin border area. Authorities planned to return him to Russian officials.
Ruth Nickie Williams, 25, a star rodeo stunt rider, died after a stunt riding accident in West Los Angeles. She and Norma Young rented trick horses and practiced when Williams slipped from the saddle and foot caught in a stirrup. The runaway halted after a mile and a half. she died two hours later in hospital.

Hundreds of anglers flocked to fish the stocked trout stream which remains open until July 24. Daily limit is one fish but anglers may keep more if all beyond one are released alive under Fish Commission rules.
Philadelphia May 21 Ins The Democratic high command eyed a top orator to deliver Truman's nominating address at the July 12 national convention. Senate minority leader Barkley and House leader Rayburn were named as possible speakers subject to convention approval. Other names floated include Lucas O Mahoney Myers and McGrath with Chicago and Midwest influence sought to rally delegates against southern resistance.
The U N was urged by its consular commission to deploy strong military intervention or a powerful neutral force as the sole means to compel a truce in Jerusalem.
The body of Sylvester Heagy 83 of Manheim was found floating in Chesapeake Bay near Pt. Concord Light by an unidentified fisherman. Heagy disappeared with his companion Robert Seidel 22 still missing after they rented a skiff to fish near Conowingo dam on Sunday.
Soft coal operators await a response from John L. Lewis after proposing to reconvene a national bargain parley to negotiate a new 1948 coal contract. Lewis met the United Mine Workers executive board and gave no comment. The Southern Coal Producers Association must be seated in any talks, or the current agreement will lapse June 30 affecting about 400,000 miners.

Six miners were killed instantly in a cave-in at Clinchfield Coal No 2 mine in Dante near Bristol amid heavy excavation. Four men escaped unharmed while officials attributed the disaster to sudden weight displacement from over heavy coal extraction. Names of the deceased include Arnold Vickers Harold Parks Oaklie Creger Darel Rasnick Troy Phillips and Boris Artdrip. All were part of district 28 United Mine Workers.
The NLRB, in a 3 to 2 ruling, says it cannot conduct union shop elections in states where law bans or restricts the practice. It marks the first board decision on the issue amid about 19 states with such statutes.
