U S staff reports Japanese forces are assembling a large invasion fleet in the southwest Pacific to strike Australia and sever Allied supply lines to Gen. Douglas MacArthur. Experts in Washington say efforts to reinforce aerial and naval defenses may avert the anticipated assault.
Moscow reports massive German losses as Red Army advances toward Kharkov. A noon communique says German reserves equipped with new tanks suffered heavy defeats while counterattacks failed to halt the Russian push. Intense fighting persisted in the Kerch peninsula area overnight with German efforts in the Izyrum Barvenkovo sector repelled.
London May 21 The German people face worsening conditions at home as Hermann Goering addressed workers admitting the war is the hardest Germany has fought and that those at home pay a price alongside the soldiers. He called the winter campaign in Russia terrible and signaled hardships ahead.
Indications show new street lights and locations requiring equipment are paused for the duration as the council is advised that securing vital war materials must take priority.
It is not yet known if city officials will crack down on motor vehicles in city service. Cities can obtain tires for municipal operations but gas rationing may prompt conservation steps. Pittsburgh May 21. A planned Homewood tribute to Harry M. Faulkner 97 the area’s last Civil War veteran was canceled by his death at 8 this morning.
Patrolman George Miller 51 and Albert Whitmore 37 were shot near a police car. Lynch 40 was found hiding in Bertha Mitchell’s cellar. Miller died at the scene and Whitmore was wounded. Miller leaves wife Gertrude and two sons George Jr 23 and Edward 20.
New York May 21 Axis air attacks on American cities and war plants are deemed probable by civilian defense director James M. Landis. The government plans 2,500,000 gas masks monthly starting end of May with free distribution to citizens and first issues to policemen firemen and air raid wardens.

A military spokesman said Japan is deploying about 80,000 troops in Chekiang Province to force China from the war. Forty thousand are assigned to frontline action as of May 15, with an 80 mile advance reported. fighting remains. Japan has concentrated nearly 3,000 troops at Nanchang.
A Vichy telegram cited by Reuters reports intense Gibraltar activity with an aircraft carrier escorted by two cruisers entering the roadstead followed by a steamer carrying 5,000 American troops whose destination was unknown. Anti-aircraft defenses and British aircraft were active while destroyers and heavy batteries conducted exercises.
House Ways and Means Committee started studying a treasury plan to collect income taxes in monthly installments as earned. Treasury expert Randolph Paul proposed the treasury gain discretion to take 1 to 10 percent of estimated tax each month instead of waiting until after year end. The aim is anti inflationary, reducing timing of tax payments and easing purchasing power.
DETROIT May 21 The first huge four motored bomber built by Ford at Willow Run has just come off the assembly lines. Ford officials say mass production on this engine of destruction for the United Nations will begin and may run at its peak over 2 billion dollars a year.
A death notice lists Mrs. Marion Irby of Mahoning Avenue and Joseph Budzowski, age 40, of 218 East Clayton Street, with the date noted as Thursday May 21, 1942. The item records two individuals tied to local addresses in a brief obituary-style notice.

James H. Haddon, 51, of Wheeling, attempted suicide with a revolver three times in one day. Each time the pistol misfired or was stopped by police before he could pull the trigger.
United Nations fliers attacked the Japanese base at Kupang Dutch Timor destroying two grounded enemy planes blasting the runway and setting fires among buildings. The Dilli base on Timor was raided as targets in the harbor area were bombed and four of twelve Zero fighters attacking Port Moresby were damaged.
Secretary Knox told President Roosevelt the Normandie liner can be salvaged. Chief Salvage Officer Commodore William S Sullivan will oversee operations after Knox conferred with Roosevelt. The ship, renamed Lafayette, caught fire at its New York pier and later capsized.
