Three youths were injured in an English avenue extension accident when a buckboard coasting downhill left the road and toppled into a ditch. L Robert Smith, 4, of Kas i Rebecca street, was badly shaken. Darrell Hoover, 14, 625 Sampson street, suffered facial lacerations and severe bruises. Lewis Hoover, 16, had a head laceration. The others escaped with minor injuries. All were taken to Jameson Memorial hospital for treatment.
Harrisburg May 21 leaders of the Republican dominated senate prepared to reconsider the administration drafted civil service bill defeated by a split party vote. The measure would extend civil service protection to health department motor police board of fish commissioners game commissioners and the proposed state civil service commission. The merit system already applies to certain bureaus of the welfare department state liquor control board department of public assistance and unemployment compensation bureau in the department of labor and industry.
Edward John Kern, 29, of Pittsburgh, identified by eye witnesses as one of four to five men in the Eldred bank robbery, held by PLB I A agency. He faces a hearing before a U S commissioner after arrest by state police and FBI agents. The May 24 robbery yielded 85 411 970 in Eldred.
A neighbor awoke to a fire destroying a vacant two-story frame house on Sheep Jir in Shenango township. Firefighters fought the blaze from 7:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Poor water supply hampered efforts. Harrisburg May 21 A conference committee of the house and senate will seek to reapportion Pennsylvania congressional districts to comply with a federal mandate reducing the state’s representation from 34 to 33. If not done all 23 congressmen must run at large next year. The plan, Wade, would add one seat to Luzerne County while cutting Philadelphia and Allegheny by one each. Democrats amended Wade by adding an Achierman bill pairing Lehigh Bucks Berks and Montgomery into a two-district map. The move sparked a house clash over Rep. Albert L. O’Connor’s Cambria district.
Democratic leaders in the Senate and House weighed a plan to adjourn during July and August amid war clouds. Senate counting noses to confirm votes for adjournment.
