Regions north of New Castle report flood and road washouts from a Saturday storm. Police in New Castle resume modified uniforms while traffic patrol targets double parking. Delegates return from Williamsport as New Castle wins the 1929 Pennsylvania Business and Professional Women's Clubs convention. Dr Mildred Rogers announces the event will be held in New Castle with more than 400 delegates expected. Seven New Castle members attended the Williamsport gathering and shared reports on state club growth and programs.
In Greenwich Village a notorious New York gangster known as Lynx, Patrick Mitchell, 28, lured to a bar by a phone call was shot to death, six bullets fired as he lay on the brass bar rail. Police arrested James Russell, alias Dummy the Gin, after rookie officer Arthur Schultheiss pursued him.
Western Pennsylvania Safety Council marks Pedestrian Week with a 3:45 daily whistle in New Castle area plants to curb pedestrian fatalities. Shenango Plant New Castle Plant and Carnegie Steel will blow at 3 p.m. each day to alert schools drivers and the public to watch for children in traffic.
United States minister John Van A MacMurray says American lives in the Pek ing Tien Tsin area will be protected if fighting erupts between Nationalists and Northerners. A note to the Peking government warns that Americans will not interfere but will be concentrated in one area for easier protection as Admiral Bristol’s fleet moves to Tien Tsin and Marines prepare under Brig Gen Smeeley Butt.
A rat terrier owned by Deputy Sheriff Willam Reynolds was poisoned near Milton Street. The dog reportedly found poisoned meat in Reynolds yard. a veterinarian was tried but the dog did not survive. The incident is believed to be the work of a local poisoner targeting the deputy.
Three daughters of J. B. Owens editor of the New Albany Gazette perished in a Mississippi house fire. Elizabeth aged 18 and high school senior Blake 16 and Helen 10 died, while parents Mr. and Mrs. Owens escaped as their home burned. Fire caused by unknown means, bodies recovered, family losses noted alongside a recent death in the same family.
Gen Umberto Nobile plans a two hour direct flight over the North Pole from Kings Bay with the Dirigible Italia. Two scientists Malmgren and Crojani will descend to study the area while rope ladders are used for landing. His wife warns against dropping the Papa cross fearing fateful consequences. Pope Pius VI presented a wooden cross to Nobile before departure.
New York May 21 Dense fog over New York harbor eased with conditions returning to normal. Insurance estimates put ship damage around 3,000,000 dollars. No lives lost and no serious injuries though over 1,000 passengers aboard the Fennland Veendam and Mohawk faced delays.
Firemen of all ranks gathered for a large memorial service at Highland United Presbyterian Church last night. The event drew about 200 volunteers paid and veteran firefighters, who marched from Park Avenue station to the church for one of the department’s most impressive observances.
A Golden Eagle trapped by Howard Liscy at Portersville was captured after attacking a steel trap. Deputies report missing chickens led game officials to decide to exile the bird to a new territory. The eagle, with a wingspan of about seven inches, was temporarily imprisoned for its conduct.
In Detroit at St Ambrose church in Grosse Pointe Park Father Foley announced at mass that no woman using lipstick would receive holy communion from his hands. He called the practice irreverent and unbecoming and said it will not be countenanced.

In Halifax the Bremen monoplane wrecked nearly beyond repair after attempting takeoff at Blanc Sablon, Saguenay, delaying flight to New York.
The Eastern Ohio and Western Pennsylvania Welsh Congregational churches chose New Castle Pennsylvania as the site for the 1928 convention. John P. Thomas of New Castle was named chairman and Samuel Whittling of New Castle served as assistant moderator. B. R. Hughes of Youngstown was treasurer with EB Jenkins of Martins Ferry as representative.
