Rural urban cooperation urged for regional planning

William M. Carroll Penn State agricultural economist urged rural urban cooperation to solve mutual problems at a county panel discussion. He warned that when industry leaves the burden of maintaining services falls on land and called for long term planning with short term benefits including better farm facilities and local job training. Heinz Fenichel of the Lawrence Regional Planning Commission noted planning is only part of the program and emphasized avoiding unwanted outcomes. Carroll cited Lawrence County’s population stability and urged a long range vision for area development.

Postal Rates Raise Urged by U S Chamber of Commerce

The U S Chamber urged Congress to raise postal rates and streamline mail handling to make the Post Office Department self supporting. It called for higher first second and third class rates to close a 554 million dollar deficit next year and recommended modernization of 40 000 post offices and revamped procedures.

Mary Alice Majewski 17 of Shenango High School will reign over the Armed Forces Day parade in New Castle announced by the Veterans Council. Her court includes Terry Williams Barbara Jordan and Rose Valentino. parade formations and reviewing stand details were given. A separate Hickory Township ordinance to license landfills and regulate hauling will be introduced June 6 with fees for operator licenses and hauling permits.

Two Die In Potomac River Missed Boat Incident

Two Cumberland men drowned when their fishing boat overturned in the Potomac River. Charles Piper 64 president of Liberty Trust Co. Cumberland and James Leader 66 who managed a Cumberland shoe store were aboard. Leader’s body was recovered near Romney West Virginia shortly after the accident occurred Thursday night.
