Moscow reports heavy artillery and airstrikes against German positions near Kharkov as Soviet forces press forward. German counterattacks with tanks and motorized units are repelled, with battles described as raging in deep defense lines.
Maj. Gen. Edward Martin and Auditor General F Clair Ross won renomination in a light turnout primary. Martin defeated James J Davis for the Republican nomination while Ross beat Judge Ralph T M Smith and Luther A Hart for the Democrats.
London May 20 hundreds of Royal Air Force bombers struck Mannheim in one of the war’s largest raids. Tons of bombs ignited huge fires and explosions against Germany’s chief Upper Rhine industrial hub, targeting factories and the St Nazaire submarine base.
For the defeated candidates the morning was gloomy with overhanging clouds, while winning candidates enjoyed a fine morning with no dust.

Reising Beaver Falls won the nomination with 3935 votes, Andrew Katcher Ambridge 3125 and Mell George Enon Valley 2326. county breakdowns followed.

War Production Board officials predicted gas rationing to conserve rubber and tires. Defense Transportation Director Joseph B. Eastman leads the program outline, with decisions due after the Tuesday WPB meeting. Eastman and aides will refine plans with Ickes and Henderson before WPB submission.
Pittsburgh May 20 Yesterdays primary election was uneventful as the special grand jury stood by to hear alleged election law violations not called to action. Jurors passed the time with a non profit bingo game in the courthouse while waiting.
Lieut. Commander George H. Earle III was denied a ballot in Haverford Pennsylvania after officials cited a two year voting requirement. Democratic leaders contend the state code also protects citizens serving abroad from losing their franchise, noting Earle was serving as a U.S. minister to Bulgaria.
Pittsburgh voters soundly defeated a proposal to expand the fire department to three eight-hour shifts. Final returns showed 74,878 opposed to 49,595 in a measure that supporters warned would cost at least $1 million annually while opponents argued it would not improve protection or fire insurance rates.
New York motorists received letters directing them to appear before local rationing boards to prove eligibility for an unlimited gasoline X card. The first batch of letters went out yesterday from rationing headquarters. OPA director Lee S. Buckingham said he had no guidance on how widely violators would be prosecuted.
An eight year old boy Howard Montgomery of Brackenridge was listed today as the latest victim of the Allegheny river. He drowned late yesterday while attempting to swim ashore from a drifting rowboat where he and a companion had been playing.
Judge Braham given huge vote as General Martin wins county against Senator Davis. Several candidates have easy time with no opposition in the primary.
Republican county tally shows Edward Martin of Washington Pa leading over United States Senator James J. Davis for Governor in the May 19 primary. With all 100 county precincts in, Martin had 6375 votes to Davis 3988, amid overall weak turnout of about 33 percent. Martin also led most running mates except a few races.
The Seventh Ward precincts lead returns with early counts. At 8 16 p m on Tuesday the first precinct reported the full Republican supreme court race count and at 8 18 p m the second precinct reported the governor Republican tally.
State Trooper Charles J. Collins 32 was fatally wounded and Edward Rogers 25 an alleged bandit was killed when Rogers refused to surrender and opened fire during a farmstead siege near Byfield Massachusetts. Collins died at Anna Jacques Hospital Newburyport.
Funeral and obituary notices include Frank Myers 71 of Lowellville and C James Leo McCrudden of New York City. Also listed are Irah Beadel 70 of 708 Emerson Avenue and Mrs Frank Morrow 63 of Newport. Other entries include Annie Elizabeth Kennedy 74 of Newport and Mrs William H Williams 6 of Vandergrift. Rita Mae DeCaprio aged ten days of 1104 Agnew Street and Mrs Phillip Sheldone 57 of Ellwood City are also noted.
Ross wins a county race in the Democratic contest as Jones trails in the legislative contest amid a low turnout with about 25 percent of the vote in the primary election.
Butler and Lawrence county voters backed F Clair Ross for governor with 1936 to 1357 for Judge Ralph H Smith. Ramsey Black led for lieutenant governor with 1777 votes, Grover C Ladner and Michael A Musmanno unopposed for supreme and superior courts respectively. Warren Hess led for secretary of internal affairs with 1652, Leo Achterman 1113. In congressional races Ines Peel led at large with 1176, Mell George carried the 26th district in this county with 1372 votes to Andrew Katehor 1184.
