Heavy Fighting in Eastern China Across Chekiang Front

Heavy fighting raged across Chekiang province south of Chuki and Fenkial with high casualties on both sides. Japanese forces advanced from Chuki and Chenghsien toward Kinhwa along five routes aided by air power while others moved southwest from Chenghsien. Chinese units resisted strongly and far border fighting continued along the Salween front with Chinese forces reported inflicting heavy losses.

Graham wins Republican nomination for Congress in district vote

Congressman Louis E. Graham easily secured re nomination in the Republican primary held Tuesday May 19. He totaled 16176 votes in Lawrence Beaver and Butler counties defeating John C. Graham 4756 and C C Magee 2846. In the Democratic primary Peter P. Reising Beaver Falls won the nomination with 3935 votes, Andrew Katcher Ambridge 3125 and Mell George Enon Valley 2326. county breakdowns followed.

Pittsburgh Voters Reject Three-Shift Firemen Plan

Pittsburgh voters soundly defeated a proposal to expand the fire department to three eight-hour shifts. Final returns showed 74,878 opposed to 49,595 in a measure that supporters warned would cost at least $1 million annually while opponents argued it would not improve protection or fire insurance rates.

New York motorists received letters directing them to appear before local rationing boards to prove eligibility for an unlimited gasoline X card. The first batch of letters went out yesterday from rationing headquarters. OPA director Lee S. Buckingham said he had no guidance on how widely violators would be prosecuted.

An eight year old boy Howard Montgomery of Brackenridge was listed today as the latest victim of the Allegheny river. He drowned late yesterday while attempting to swim ashore from a drifting rowboat where he and a companion had been playing.

Republican county tally shows Edward Martin of Washington Pa leading over United States Senator James J. Davis for Governor in the May 19 primary. With all 100 county precincts in, Martin had 6375 votes to Davis 3988, amid overall weak turnout of about 33 percent. Martin also led most running mates except a few races.

The Seventh Ward precincts lead returns with early counts. At 8 16 p m on Tuesday the first precinct reported the full Republican supreme court race count and at 8 18 p m the second precinct reported the governor Republican tally.

Alleged Bandit Shot And Killed In Mass Police Trap

State Trooper Charles J. Collins 32 was fatally wounded and Edward Rogers 25 an alleged bandit was killed when Rogers refused to surrender and opened fire during a farmstead siege near Byfield Massachusetts. Collins died at Anna Jacques Hospital Newburyport.
