Talks stall as county teachers union contracts drag
After four months of bargaining none of the county districts has settled with its teachers. Several employ mediators, and Ellwood City plans to do so too. About 1,000 teachers in Laurel, Mohawk, Neshannock, New Castle, Shenango, Union and Wilmington, plus the vo tech and Frew Mill, face expiring contracts within three months.

UPI reports protesters outside Three Mile Island were arrested while inside the plant as two diesel generator failures triggered unusual events. Fifty-one demonstrators blocked an entrance the same day, with most released after fines totaling 68.50 each for obstructing a highway. one paid 143.50 for disorderly conduct following a police scuffle. Officials said offsite power was intact and Unit 2 incidents did not affect operations. A June 27 NRC vote is tentatively planned on restarting Unit 1.

Missile sinks carrier near Kharg Island in Gulf conflict
A missile sank the 16,557-ton bulk carrier Fidelity near Iran's Kharg Island. Twenty one crew were rescued, twelve remained in life rafts as the Gulf war between Iran and Iraq escalates with nine ships reportedly damaged or destroyed. Iran denied Iraqi claims of two ship hits while U S officials prepared diplomatic options to curb escalation. The Bahrain-based Lloyds agent cited the attack as part of mounting regional violence threatening oil exports.

Hundreds of area residents lined downtown streets to greet Union High School student Barb Baynham as she carried the Olympic torch into New Castle. The 16 year old arrived about 7 20 p m after picking up the flame on East Washington and Chestnut. The 9000 mile journey will pass through 33 states and DC with 4200 runners in 82 day trek from New York to Los Angeles.

Rumsfeld resigns as Middle East envoy for private sector return
President Reagan accepted the resignation of Donald Rumsfeld from his unpaid post as special Middle East envoy. Rumsfeld, 51, will return to his role as CEO of G D Searle & Co in Skokie Illinois. Reagan said there are no plans to name a replacement negotiator.
