Local officials seek re election in Neshannock area

Yesterday's winners include John E Cater Republican seeking re election as township supervisor after 24 years on the board and a prior chairmanship. Janet L Kalajainen Democrat 34 of New Castle Register and Recorder completes second four year term after serving as chief deputy. James A Reed 51 District Justice and police chief of Neshannock Township ran on both party ballots with over 20 years policing. Nancy A Valiensi 44 Register and Recorder Republican assistant manager at Castle Rents and former four year New Castle Area School Board member. Tax reform crushed by voters in Lawrence County

Voters across Pennsylvania rejected Gov. Casey’s local tax reform plan by a 3 to 1 margin. Unofficial returns showed 1,482,107 no to 498,964 yes statewide with the amendment failing in nearly all counties. The measure aimed to shift local taxes from property to income and sales taxes, sparking extensive political debate and a call for an alternative plan.

Lawren ce County votes approve small games in 17 towns

Voters in 17 Lawrence County communities approve small games of chance for non profit groups such as churches and charities. Seven municipalities reject the referendum including New Wilmington Neshannock and Slippery Rock. Total party voters 21,032 with 12,155 for legalization and 8,877 against. Some areas may yet change as remaining ballots are counted. Licenses cost 100 and vendors must use state printers.

City school board incumbents win spots in fall election

Four incumbents vie for re election to the New Castle Area School Board after top spots on Democratic and Republican ballots. Primary counts show David A. Richards and Larry R. DeBlasio leading on both tickets, with Angelo A. Papa Jr. and Elaine Withrow also securing nominations. Charles P. Cuba completes Democratic and Republican slates. former leaders Charles Cook and Albert Lastoria miss nomination.

Russo Cioffi Wasilewski lead New Castle council race

Incumbent Jane Wasilewski and former councilman John Russo Jr won the Democratic nominations for New Castle City Council. Wasilewski led with 2,542 votes (28.67 percent), Russo 2,532 (28.55 percent). Republican Anthony F. Cioffi had 1,396 (65.38 percent) with write-in results pending. Democratic rivals Mastrangelo and Padice posted 1,882 (21.2) and 1,840 (20.75) respectively.

Robert L. Clark, 53, of RD 5, sheriff candidate and farmer. A Republican, he served in the military police and the Washington DC police department. Clark was a deputy warden at Lawrence County Jail and holds a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice from American University.

Officials appoint solid waste director Amy Labi-Carando

Amy Labi-Carando was named by county commissioners yesterday to be the county solid waste coordinator. She will start June 12 at 18000 dollars annually and work with municipalities on the plan due by June 30 drawn by Brown, Vence and Associates. The plan will suggest recycling and disposal actions, require adoption by municipalities, and may qualify for 90 percent state funding. Labi-Carando, a Neshannock Twp resident and Villa Maria High School teacher, will also engage schools and the public.
