Two major surprises and a tightly fought race left Lawrence County voters anxious as the primary results came in. Nominees advanced without challenger while others edged out rivals in a close, precinct by precinct count.
A school bus carrying seven students collided with a tree on Rodg ers Rd in Plain Grove near Slippery Rock. Passengers Sally Cumpston and Richard Burns were admitted to Grove City Hospital with facial lacerations and a fractured leg, respectively. The driver John Neely received minor injuries and the bus owner Gaylord C Eppinger faced an investigation as police continue to determine the crash cause.
In a political shift, two newcomers defeated veteran City Councilman E. Gene Schweinsberg in the Republican primary. Democratic candidates led by Richard H. Biddle and running mate D. J. Razzano won decisively in a seven person field. GOP school board winners were Robert L. Preston Jr. Robert M. White and Henry J. Hamilton.
A UPI report cites a Hungarian space expert Jozsef Sinka claiming the Soviet Venus launch used a five stage booster near 1.6 million pounds of thrust and weight around 1.6 million pounds, implying a booster near two million pounds thrust, widening the space power gap with the United States.
Special elections filled four assembly seats left vacant by deaths and a resignation.Elizabeth Wynd won Wyoming County, Edwin G. Hall captured Montgomery County 3rd District, James A. Esler beat Thomas H. Welsh in Allegheny 17th District, and James W. Greenlee won Philadelphia 7th District replacing deceased Francis Muldowney. Apothaker lost in Philadelphia.

Hollywood mourns its beloved star Gary Cooper with private services attended by family. Veronica Cooper and Maria Cooper placed poppies on his casket as pallbearers prepared it for burial after his death from cancer at age 60. Mrs Alice Bracia Cooper, his mother, kissed the coffin before burial at Holy Cross Cemetery Inglewood.
In Seoul Lt. Gen. Lee Han Lim ordered front line troops to stay neutral amid South Korea’s coup, undermining Gen. Carter Magruder’s bid for military support of the toppled government. The move widens tension over U.S. influence as the junta consolidates power.

In Pennsylvania primaries voters turnout was light across 24 cities with local and municipal races dominating. In the 16th District special election Republican John C. Kunkel won the seat, while Kathryn Vanderslice alleged machine tampering prompting FBI review.

In Ban Namone Laos negotiators from the royal government and two rebel groups agreed in principle to form a broad coalition. The plan envisions Premier Boun Oum's pro Western government uniting with neutralists led by Souvanna Phouma and the Pathet Lao.
In Geneva the United States urged a strengthened veto-free control commission to enforce the Laos cease fire. Secretary of State Rusk condemned repeated Communist violations despite a recent report that the truce was generally effective. He called for a five-point plan to guarantee Laos neutrality and independence and barred Communist veto power.
After ballots are tallied the district reports diverse reactions with surprises in some races and favorites prevailing. Voters step back as results settle, marking the end of election day with the count leading to final standings.
Nearly 1,000 homemakers attended the Fantasy of Foods cooking school in the Cathedral yesterday. Sponsored by New Castle News and Penn Power, Miss Janice Plager and Miss Elizabeth McKellin led the event with demonstrations of nine international dishes. Winners received prize tickets and recipes, with a grand electric range prize to be awarded Friday. food prepared on stage was given to audience ticket holders.
