Lawrence County school districts face a 1960 61 operating cost total near 10.7 million dollars up almost 3 million from this year. Budgets approved or adopted for most districts push property taxes and per capita levies higher to cover the rise. PUC Sets Deadline for Mahoning Ave Viaduct Plans
The Public Utility Commission orders the state Department of Highways to submit detailed drawings for Mahoning Ave Viaduct repairs by June 27 in cooperation with New Castle. Consoer Townsend and Associates granted plans usage on April 13 for the renovation, with the viaduct closed since October 27, 1958 due to delays. Off Duty Officer Beaten by Three Youths in City Street
An off-duty New Castle patrolman, James Patton, was attacked by three youths on N Beaver and Washington St at about 4 am. The assailants, Arthur McCormick 21, Arthur Powell 21, and Ralph Searfoss 23, were arrested or identified after a witness saw the incident. Patton refused hospital care and is on a 20 day vacation. The youths face aggravated assault and battery charges at a hearing before Alderman Margaret Orres.
