President Wilson delivers a blunt note to Germany demanding an immediate stop to submarine warfare against neutral and peaceful commerce. The President asserts U S rights on the high seas and warns of unsatisfactory Berlin reply. Continued on Page Six.
Mayor Tyler urged razing Warner's Row in the lower First ward after police reports labeled them a nuisance. City Solicitor Gardner cited a new health ordinance as a possible basis, but council will wait for the ordinance to take effect before acting.
Council members spent about an hour examining J. Clyde Gilfillan's land purchase from the White estate near the Wilmington road. They debated protecting Jefferson street to the city line and whether Gilfillan should bear fill costs, with no action taken until a formal offer to open the street is presented.
In Rome on May 14 demonstrators clashed after Premier Salandra and his cabinet resigned. German Reichstag member Mathias Erzberger was attacked until carabineers intervened. Gabriel D Annunzio is urged to head the new Interventionist party as Italy weighs war or peace amid a green book on negotiations with Teutonic allies.
Washington May 14 In the German crisis the War Department showed no unusual activity no orders beyond routine and no fortification changes. Secretary Garrison said no unusual orders were issued to arsenals or the army and declined to discuss the president's note to Germany or Berlin's possible reply.
Louis Felice of Jersey City is held after using a grey wig and blue inspector uniform to enter Mrs. Dennis Mc Gee's Bayonne home. He shot Miss Margaret Cassidy and Mrs. Mc Gee. Grace Hawthorne, alleged accomplice, is in custody. The wounded woman is expected to recover.
The city council let three more paving contracts this morning. Woods and Golder received two awards while Burns Brothers took the remaining contract. Bids were opened and the successful bid announced after the city engineer tabulated the figures.
Buffalo Rochester and Pittsburg Railroad begins grading for a freight yard near the Penn Motor plant to handle anticipated Federal Radiator company traffic. Local officials and businessmen contributed land and support to secure the Radiator works in New Castle with four acres of buildings planned. C G Blackmore travels east after deal closure and will return to remodel the Penn plant for Radiator operations.
Trouble over W. K. Knowling's pay persists as he seeks back pay from the court decision date while the city solicitor argues salary is due only from the ordinance effective date earlier this month.
Wire Welsh and company represented by attorney J. W. Cunningham filed a suit to collect a whiskey bill of 580.50 with interest from March 1 1913. The sale allegedly occurred in Lowellville between October 12 1912 and March 1 1913 and the defendants have not paid.
The city council ordered the electrician to turn on the curb lighting tonight after a dispute over a $2.48 or $5 issue. Lights will burn permanently if no further delays occur, despite prior failures to activate the system.
Miss Anna Belle Stewart daughter of W C Stewart of 328 Boyles avenue has been elected principal of a Home Mission school at Mt Vernon Virginia. She has four years experience in southern Home Mission schools including Concord North Carolina and the current school where she becomes principal. The promotion shows board esteem and her ability.
The Boyles Field Land company annual meeting reported 81 lots sold since March with 51 residence sites remaining of 210 plotted. Directors elected were Hiram G. Miller Fred L. Rentz Charles Slaughenhoup Paxton K. Fike Will L. Aiken. Officers chosen: President Hiram G. Miller Secretary Will L. Aiken Treasurer Paxton K. Fike.
Next Sunday at St. Andrew's chapel on Long Avenue Ascension Sunday will be observed with services of a special character. Music of a special nature will be the feature.
Mrs. Mabel D. Stark of Philadelphia deputy president of Pennsylvania will inspect Colonel D. W. McCracken circle, Ladies of the G A R, Monday at 7 30 PM. The officers want many members present. Mrs. George Deike and sons George and Kenneth of Pittsburgh conclude a two weeks visit to Dr and Mrs F Van Wert of North Mercer Street.
John Tanner, injured when struck by a Baltimore and Ohio train near the junction, died at Shenango Valley hospital from pleural pneumonia two weeks after the accident. A native of West Middlesex born June 1, 1854, he was a miner survived by a large family and a funeral is set for Saturday at 2:30 pm in the Coaltown Free Methodist church.
Berlin reports the Austro German army under General von Mackensen has moved on Przemysl after driving Russians from Galicia and nearing the city. Russians penetrate German trenches briefly, while Allied efforts at Ypres fail with heavy losses. Carency evacuated. Przemysl siege history recalled.
Sheriff Carl P Johnston seized the property of J. W. Henley in Ma honing township at suit of George Henley. The 117 acre estate includes an eight room brick house and will be sold on May 29.
Judge William E. Porter agrees to enter the judicial race following petitions circulated by S. A. Barnes and other supporters. The move reflects long standing discussion over the wet and dry liquor license issue and signals the opening of campaigns read by Lawrence County voters.
The steamship Collavinie reports ramming and sinking a German submarine off the Northumberland coast. Oil on the surface indicated a hit through its bows. Also noted: the British trawler Cancer sunk by a German submarine and the White Star liner Dominion arriving safely in Liverpool.
Four individuals are listed in the local death notices. Albert G. Cox age 86 of Marshfield Oregon. John Tanner age 60 of Coaltown. Samuel Moody age 42 of Hickory Two. and Mrs. P. A. Shaw age 63 of New Wilmington.
