Washington officials say the United States will press its diplomatic offensive to contain Soviet expansionism and aid democracies. They reject any two power conference with the Soviet Union despite Moscow's move to call an international conference to end the cold war.
SHAMOKIN Pa May 13 Rescue squads worked to free three miners believed alive in a water filled mine 200 feet underground near Shamokin The miners Edward Heck Charles Bashore and Peter Gordon are independent miners from the Ranshaw area shaft owned by the trapped men More than 75 feet of water filled part of the shaft hindering escape Pumps were to be placed to lower water levels as rescue efforts continued.

LAKE SUCCESS N Y May 13 The United States and Great Britain ask the United Nations to appoint a high commissioner for all of Palestine. A five nation committee would select the official, subject to General Assembly approval before the mandate deadline. The Palestine Commission would be suspended under the new formula.
In Portland, Oregon, May 13, the Dewey and Stassen campaigns push toward the May 21 Republican primary. The contest will bind Oregon's 12 delegates on the first ballot, with four at large and two from each of four districts. A close race is forecast and a delegate tie is possible despite no exact popular vote tie. Campaign leaders plan a final debate setup.
In Dauphin county court the Commonwealth defended the year-old soft drink tax and entered a denial to charges that the levy violates the state's uniformity clause. The defense was filed against four of eight suits challenging the tax's constitutionality.
The Greater New Castle Association celebrated its 10th birthday with a ghost chasing segment and speeches by Hon. G Mason Owlett and GNCA presidents. Owlett praised New Castle’s character and courage amid adversity, noting the city’s past greatness as a frontier town more than a century ago.

Paul G Hoffman economic assistance administrator told the senate appropriations committee of money needs to launch the European aid program. Congress authorized 5.3 billion for sixteen Marshall plan countries as Vandenberg’s defense proposal awaits policy committee action.
Gov James H Duff set June 28 for the electrocution of George H Chapman of Bingham Township Potter County for the fatal shooting of his wife last August Chapman pleaded guilty but said he was intoxicated The case was appealed to the supreme court which upheld the trial court on April 22 Clemency pleas are expected to be presented to the State Pardons Board in June.
Fifteen student nurses from the March and August 1948 sessions at New Castle Hospital School of Nursing received diplomas in a Wednesday evening ceremony at Ben Franklin High School with 8 o clock start. John J. Maher led the program as president. Rev Fr John Brueckner gave the invocation. Dr Charles H Whalen offered congratulations and spoke on nursing’s critical role. Fr Arthur B DeCrane delivered the principal address urging graduates to accept the challenging path ahead and live up to Florence Nightingale’s ideals.
President Truman refused to release an FBI letter about Dr. Edward A. Condon, director of the Bureau of Standards, saying Congress cannot compel disclosure of confidential government information. The issue arises as the House presses a bill to require cabinet officials to turn over requested information.
DETROIT May 13. The one day strike of 75,000 UAW CIO members at Chrysler forced 11,000 body-builders into idleness as Briggs Manufacturing suspends Chrysler bound bodies. Two thousand more layoffs are expected at Briggs by Monday and 1,800 furloughed at Evansville plant, signaling rising unemployment among Chrysler suppliers. No indication of a lawsuit by Chrysler against the union. Plunge proves fatal. Funeral services for Bertha Schiegle set for Saturday in Chambersburg after a fall in her home.
Sam Yee, a 72 year old Chinese laundryman from 127 East North street, was found mortally wounded in his room. He died at Jameson Memorial hospital at 4 10 this morning from a personal safety related wound. Yee came to New Castle 40 years ago and owned a laundry on East North street. He kept a .38 pistol for protection during past local unrest, and the bullet penetrated the brain after he wounded himself, leaving him alive for over three hours. Wing Yee found him and notified Davis Yee, who alerted police. Sam Yee was born in San Francisco on September 9, 1875. His body will be moved to Sampson Funeral Home in Neville street for burial at Homewood Cemetery Two weeks hence.
John Rentz of Harbor road found a rare box turtle on his property this week. City forester Owen P. Fox identified it as a rare local species with a high domed top shell and hinges that hide the head and limbs. The yellow markings on the shell are native, and the turtle may perform ecological work once done by the toad in the region.
The Dunbar plant of Pennsylvania Wire Glass near Connellsville was closed today by a strike involving 110 workers. Wage demands are the major issue in the dispute.
Coroner Charles E. Allen reports 1948 traffic deaths in Lawrence County have reached 15 this year, surpassing the 1947 total of 12 after a Tuesday morning crash killed four. The year to date exceeds last year by three fatalities.
Detroit May 13 Union attempts to bar white collar workers from closed Chrysler plants sparked a police warning that gates would be kept open by force if needed. Police commissioner Toy pledged protection for entrants and exits and said commando squads are ready to prevent violence.
Sam Yee aged 72 of 127 East North Street and Mrs. Hugh N Callander aged 87 of 203 West Washington Street are listed in the death records.
Machinists of the United Engineering and Foundry company will vote Friday on maintaining union membership and dues check off as required by the Taft Hartley Act. If approved, the company will recognize the union as bargaining agent and deduct dues from payrolls. Members must maintain membership for the contract term. Local 1671, International Association of Machinists represents the workers.
The North Huntingdon school board voted to enact four taxes to cover a $50,000 budget increase. The measures include a five mill income tax in the township, 5 cents per ton on deep mined coal, 10 cents per ton on strip mined coal, and a 10 percent amusement tax.
