Profiles of the four candidates in the upcoming New Castle mayoral primary identify Tim Fulkers and others. Each candidate outlines goals for city services, development, and fiscal responsibility ahead of next week's election.
New Castle Mayor Tim Fulker, a 47 year old Republican, says he wants four more years to complete begun projects. He stresses nonpartisan public service, appointing qualified staff regardless of party, and fixing potholes and sewers for the community. Please see TIM, page 28.
Ed Jopek 71 of 786 Vogan Street outlines 40 years in business and a city council term as foundation for a mayoral run. He argues he can express ideas better as mayor and initiate new programs to lead the community into the future. Jopek notes the mayor leads and wants to present his own agenda if elected. Christine Sands, a New Castle City Council member for eight years, seeks the mayor's post. The 51 year old plan focuses on making fiberoptic wiring available to local businesses and pushing technology age advancements while pursuing her ideas for the community.
William Pud Stevenson 47 of 1103 Delaware Ave says New Castle politics stagnates and targets the mayoral race. A Republican candidate and Menichino Paving operator with no political experience he aims to start at the top after considering school board council or county posts.
Attorney Thomas M. Piccione leads spending for the Lawrence County Court of Common Pleas with $49,935.01 in the primary, while J. Craig Cox follows at $41,206.36. Piccione raised $55,892.90 with multiple contributions. Cox reports $49,169.96 in receipts, including $41,098.33 of his own money. John W. Hodge and Susan M. Papa also filed reports with varied receipts and expenses as four candidates run.
Charles F. Dininger Jr., 68, a Mercer County NRA volunteer since 1981, urged enforcement of current gun laws and more education for parents and youths on social and moral standards, arguing against tighter legislation in response to last month’s Littleton, Colorado violence.
Prompted by the Colorado high school incident, anti gun groups and gun manufacturers warn that safety locks may give a false sense of security. Dininger cites 18 existing gun laws violated and notes weak enforcement during the Clinton administration. President Clinton convened a White House meeting on child violence, but the NRA was not invited.
A pumper truck responding to a false alarm at a New Castle school collided with a car at North Jefferson and Falls streets around 10 45 a m. Fireman Edward Chestney drove the rig, while driver of the other vehicle was hospitalized with unspecified injuries. Fire chief James Donston confirmed details.
