Public service job funds reach Pennsylvania total

The Labor Department announced a nationwide 6.6 billion allocation for public service jobs, with Pennsylvania receiving 348.7 million and Lawrence County alone getting about 3.73 million. The funds are to create or maintain roughly 720,000 jobs over the next five years under a new bill Carter may sign.

Manpower pay rate questioned by Labor Department

The U S Department of Labor objects to Lawrence County plans to pay $2.60 an hour in a county summer work program. Labor official Martin Weinles says the rate limits hiring and contradicts the program’s goal to place disadvantaged youth. He notes the figure is unrealistically high versus other local jobs and urges justification in a grant plan.

County official advised on use of envelopes in campaign

County solicitor Frank G. Verterano told the Board of Elections that District Justice Merle Hart will stop using county envelopes for campaign materials and will reimburse the county for stationery. The board seeks a review of election laws and a district attorney probe to determine any criminal action. Verterano also found no improprieties in a residency dispute involving another candidate, Louis A. DeNome. District 34 covers Neshannonk, Wilmington, Washington, Pulaski, Plain Grove, New Wilmington, and Volant.
