The Republican county committee is organized with proceedings held at the court house today. Local party members gathered to establish leadership and plan campaign actions for the upcoming elections.
The Lawrence County Republican committee met at the courthouse and re elected Charles H Young as county chairman Harvey E Martin as secretary and A C Hyde as treasurer A secretary assistant was created with Edward K Logan elected to fill the post The group pledged support for the county state and national tickets and outlined plans for the coming campaign including resolutions endorsing the commission form of government continued on Page Five.
Hugh O Neil formerly of New Castle and a longtime employee at local furnaces died in Cleveland after an explosion at the American Steel and Wire furnace. He was 30, married, and had lived with Mr and Mrs James Keeley on Borough Stone street. He had been a resident of New Castle until about a year and a half ago.
Mark Preston a 25 year old tinworker was found unconscious near the Acme Lumber offices about six o clock Friday evening. He was taken to Shenango Valley Hospital in critical condition after a lumber company employee found him and called for aid. Doctors found little trace of creosote and his heavy drinking history is noted. Grief over his wife’s recent death is suspected to have prompted a possible self destruction attempt.
United Press reports all levees in the flood district were holding but conditions in Baton Rouge are grave. A high wind with hail and lightning breached waters over the levees and damaged temporary earthworks. New Orleans received 1.7 inches of rain in 25 minutes with streets flooded and basements submerged. Thousands worked through the night to pile sandbags against dikes as six inch rains swelled waters across the state.
Elizabeth Davis was 81 Friday, celebrated at the home of her son-in-law Newton Teets at 405 West Grant Avenue. The Pulaski township native, daughter of the late James Huston, is among the city’s longest‑serving respected residents. Guests included L. M. Tittsler, C. P. Buckalow, Elizabeth Buckalow, Alfred Davis, Kinsell and son Albert, J. D. Lyons family, William Robinson family, Alfred Houston family, Peats family, and others.
President Taft and Chief Justice White attended the inauguration of John Grier Hibben as Princeton president. Hibben defined liberal education as making a man, with Mahlon Pitney administering the oath. Taft and White received honorary LL D degrees amid a Prospect to Nassau Hall parade and a gymnasium luncheon.
Rudolph Stedeldorfer, former manager of Armour packing plants in the city and recent head of a large plant in St. Louis, has been recalled to take charge here. He succeeds Harry Hichelberger, who will tour the country for the firm. Stedeldorfer is regarded as highly capable in the packing house field, with New Castle’s plant having thrived under his previous leadership. His return pleases many friends.
In Indianapolis on May 11 the Socialist party wrestles over control between direct action backers led by William D Haywood and the so called parlor Socialists backed by Victor Berger as the national convention nears. Funds are raised to support Industrial Workers of the World street meetings in San Diego to resist deportations and spread investigative reports.
Louis Broughabeh, 14, of Hufnagel Flats, Dikson, was shot through the heart near the Olyphant No 2 breaker of the D and H Co. He is in critical condition as detectives probe an alleged accidental discharge by a patrolman while dispersing a crowd.
Joseph Jarvis, twice prize winner in gardening contests, registers for a Clare P. DuShane Eastside lot. Contest rules allow any age but no one over twenty may compete for a prize. First registrants choose the best lots.
The revenue cutters Windom and Winona reached New Orleans and moved up the river to assist in flood rescues around New Roads and central flooded districts. Continuing rains worsened the situation, leaving the outlook grave.
A boy who stole a driving horse from R F Hipple of Greenville was arrested yesterday at Grove City and confined. He had attempted multiple sales of the horse.
Jack Graham of Wallace avenue is reported to suffer an attack of measles to Health Officer McCandless today.
A section man for the Bessemer company named V Summerville was instantly killed at Odell station near Butler yesterday.
Pittsburg police report Joseph Schwert, driven by his years of searching for his brother lost on the Titanic, allegedly attempted suicide. He was arrested.
The mental condition of Rev. Clarence V. T. Richeson, condemned for murder, hinges on four Boston alienists Drs. Briggs Morton Prince Steadman and Leonard who will observe him at Charles street jail. If two declare insanity Gov Foss will seek leniency. if two declare sanity Richeson will die in the chair.
A Beaver Falls Chamber of Commerce meeting last evening discussed establishing a public market. The plan calls for borough council action to reserve part of a street for farmers and others to sell their goods on specific days weekly. The committee led by KE Corbus will gauge farmer sentiment.
City Engineer Milholland orders the contractor to start relaying sections of Washington Street and North Street repavings. No response or tearing up of faulty paving has occurred, and further North Street repaving is stalled though bricks are being brought in.
Short obituary notes list John W Wilkison age 58 of Shenango Township William McClintock age 43 of Newport and Hugh O Neil age 30 of Cleveland. The items appear as brief death notices without additional biographical detail.
The piece reports a planned clash between government troops led by Gen. Victoriano Huerta and rebel forces under Gen. Pascual Orozco. Forces total about 5,000 Federals and 7,000 rebels with varied artillery and rifles. Federals claim superiority and probable victory while rebels cite convict-heavy federal ranks as a weakness. The battle is expected today or Sunday with control of northern Mexico as the stake.
Cc H. Andrews formerly assistant division engineer for the Baltimore and Ohio railroad with New Castle headquarters and recent Baltimore assignment has been appointed division engineer for the district. He succeeds R G Glass who resigns to join Illinois Steel in Chicago. Friends in this city cordial about the change and Andrews return.
Washington May 11 managers for presidential candidates released pledged delegate totals up to today. Taft claimed 317 Roosevelt 237 La Follette 6 Cummins 10 Clark 174 Wilson 164 Underwood 84 Marshall 30 Burke 10 Baldwin 14 Harmon 4. Delegates needed to clinch 66 for Taft era and 729 for Democrats.
City treasurer reports 123 dog license tags sold since May 1 while more than 600 tags were sold last year as local owners fail to secure tags for their dogs.
J Bruce Ismay, White Star Line managing director, arrives at Liverpool aboard the Adriatic to a cheering crowd. He notes sympathy cables from England and expresses appreciation for support. He defends American press coverage and stands by his forthcoming explanation to the Senate inquiry.
At 1 45 this afternoon the Third ward firemen answered a call to 218 North Walnut street for a kitchen gas light flare up. Mrs Jones tried to light the gas and a slight explosion occurred. Firemen arrived and were briefly overwhelmed by excitement as no fire was found after arrival. Mrs Jones fainted but recovered quickly.
Huerta leads a night march across the desert toward Orozco’s rebels in a decisive clash expected soon. United Press reports say government troops are well equipped with ample ammunition and machine guns, while rebels are tired and hungry amid harsh conditions. Continued on Page Five.
F. E. Gorby Baltimore and Ohio chief clerk on crutches after a platform fall on a moving train near New Castle Junction. A severe ankle wrenching left him unable to walk. A second item reports John Elmer McClelland of Bluffton believed to have relatives in New Castle, with a postmaster seeking his kin via a letter found in hopes of locating family.
Two people were killed and six injured when the Dixie flyer northbound side swiped a freight on a siding at Smiths Switch near Vincennes Indiana. Victims include W L Miller of Vicksburg and S M Hyatt of Shelburn. The fatally injured is Joseph Ramsey of Clinton Pennsylvania. All deceased and injured were passengers.
