Appraisal figures for the Trust Company exceed expectations and depositors are sure of full recovery. The report indicates stockholders are likely to receive something, with better than anticipated results from the wreck assessment.
The receiver expects an initial dividend around 50 percent and plans a trip to Harrisburg to speed payouts. Appraisers report cash and good securities of 716,628.50 against 595,000 owed to depositors, with further potential from doubtful and bad loans possibly boosting returns for stockholders.
The document lists cash items 34,975 approximate, 46,614.14 for commercial loans, 12,876.95 for collateral loans, 800.00 for demand loans, 104.60, 2,370.39, 21,310.00, 18,791.79 and 1,200.00 for mortgage loans, investment securities, real estate, furniture and fixtures.
At a hearing before Alderman Morrison on Friday evening four men arrested after last Friday’s fatal affray at Frank Janusz’s Sheep Hill home were released. Held on a disorderly conduct charge, they faced suspicions related to the wound that killed John Schendzink. Prosecution offered no new material, and Morrison discharged the prisoners.
Director of health C C Hormer announced a Sunday water program after Mayor Horner ordered dry Sundays. On Saturday fountains were installed citywide to serve Shenango beverages to crowds all summer. Three fountains will operate at the city building the Diamond and the Long Avenue Moravia corner.
Judge Porter set Monday June 3 to hear exceptions to the dissolution of Rock Point Coal company. Objections claim tenants in common ownership of Taylor township land underlying tunnels and coal mined therefrom. Rock Point Coal disputes lines crossing. Engineers to survey before court.
The New York Republican state committee launched Governor Charles E. Hughes as the party’s presidential candidate. Former Governor Odell Jr. pressed a resolution endorsing Hughes but was tabled 32 to 4 for being too soon. The committee then backed most of Hughes’s reform agenda.
The Handel Oratorio society led by Paul Browne Patterson again dazzled Friday at First Presbyterian Church. Critics praised The Beatitudes and The Messiah as the finest performances yet in New Castle, honoring Mr. and Mrs. Patterson with a gold purse and roses. Debuts by Miss Mary Clark and Miss Margaret Sankey highlighted a program featuring soloists and chorus in a period-appropriate, citywide celebration.
Rumors persisted Saturday that the Shenango glass plant would resume operations with an independent company backing and John W. Knox as manager. The plant would shift to hand blowing with about 72 blowers, Knox said in an interview denying any knowledge of such plans. He cited gas shortages as the main obstacle to steady operation. The plant remains owned by the trust and is currently being dismantled.

A mob of seven hundred striking longshoremen clashed with Italian strikebreakers on the Campania at 34th Street and North River. The melee left many hurt, two police on site, and officers restored order as strikebreakers were driven off the ship. Similar rioting occurred at the Panama line dock. police rescued non union workers. Philadelphia agents lure New York replacements, with many dock workers slated to move by Monday.
Eleven members of the Black Hand gang convicted of conspiracy on Monday were sentenced by Judge Halsey in Wilkes-Barre to one year in county jail and a $25 fine plus costs.
Tonight expect heavy frost with clear skies and calm winds. Sunday looks fair and slightly warmer as a front passes, bringing lighter winds and continued dry conditions.
The New Castle Athletic club offers free passes to city ministers to attend boxing exhibitions. The management invites at least one or two clergy members at ringside to prove the events are clean and not prize fights. If any crookedness is found the club will discontinue the bouts. The ministers decide whether to accept.
A deed transferring 8.33 acres in the Seventh Ward from Adrian Iselin Jr of New York to the Standard Steel Car Company was recorded at the courthouse. The deed lists $1 as consideration and details a parcel beginning at the northeast corner of the company lands, with multiple boundary lines along rail lines and a neighboring Pittsburg Stove and Range property.
