Election charges filed against two Lawrence County figures
Lawrence County Democratic Chairman Peter A. Vessella and Charles S. Cook were charged yesterday with election code violations over anonymous mailings in the 1987 Democratic primary. The state attorney general’s office will prosecute after a referral from the district attorney due to a conflict of interest. The two fliers attacked incumbent Vern L. Eppinger and City Council member Elizabeth M. Verterano distributed prior to the May 1987 primary. Eppinger lost the primary. Verterano later won a commissioner nomination and the seat in the general election.

The district attorney's office investigates missing funds in the Lawrence County prothonotary's office and a separate probe into time sheet discrepancies by the former voter registration director. Controller Foht reported a $238.50 shortage across 39 transactions from 1987 to 1989, with restitution and one employee resigning. Expressway span design completed for Pa. 60 bridge project
Lawrence County Planning Commission heard an update from Harvey Haack state deputy secretary of transportation on the Mahoning River bridge at Covert's Crossing in Union Township. The 1,700 foot four lane span marks the first segment of the missing 15.5 mile Beaver Valley Expressway section linking Union Township to Chippewa Township in Beaver County as environmental issues are resolved.

Bridge project contracts eyed for summer update
Turnpike Commission engineers say the bridge construction is to be contracted this summer after earlier notes that late summer start. Delays arose from erosion and sedimentation control plan snags, now being resolved by URS Co engineers of Akron Ohio. The remaining five highway sections in Lawrence and Beaver counties face 1990 contracting with design 65 70 75 percent complete. full project aims for 1992 completion linking Union Township to Chippewa Township in Beaver County to Interstate 80 at Mercer and Pittsburgh International Airport.
