Common council rejects a 10 1/2 mill city tax levy for next year while a school levy adds one mill. The 18 1/2 mill rate remains. debate centered on funding Washington street repaving from general revenue. Continued on Page Two.
Saturday will bring a large distribution of wages in New Castle as Carnegie Steel, American Sheet and Tin Plate, Standard Car and other firms plan to pay workers. Over $200,000 will be distributed, with Pennsylvania already paying last Saturday and Lake Erie this week. B and O to pay next week, signaling improving business conditions.
Members of the senior class have three days of school work before final examinations. A two weeks vacation precedes commencement to prepare for events of the last week. After exams, an announcement will name the honor students.
A quiet wedding united Miss Rosena Krestel and Michael Shuster of the city. Both young people are well known locally and the ceremony was solemnized by day.

William E B Jones seeks a divorce from Frankie Jones for desertion after a July 4 1902 marriage and a separation on April 20 1909.
William E. Patterson owner of a Spitzer building restaurant in Toledo says Billy Sunday sermons against intoxicants prompted him to remove the bar and close earlier each night at 8 o clock. Patterson, who has opposed saloon trade, will run the restaurant without a bar and may retire if it fails.
The Lansing Michigan supreme court issues an order compelling the boards of supervisors for Genesee and Calhoun counties to issue saloon licenses.
As lake navigation resumes, Pennsyltvania railroad section sees hiring rebound. About 40 to 50 furloughed engineers and other workers return to regular runs, with crews of four to five taking long trips to the lake. Rail traffic outlook improves toward normal operations.
May 9 Pittsburg district reports the strike situation largely unchanged. Next talks set between railroad and union officials after negotiations reopened yesterday. Rail line says it negotiates with individuals rather than the AFL. No disorders reported at shops or engine houses. strikebreakers continue as recruits join the picket line. Night inspectors at Union depot follow day inspectors who walked out yesterday.
In Juarez early today Gen. Francisco I. Madero's troops gained control after fierce street battles. Federal forces under Navarro were largely silenced and began withdrawing as rebels pressed the main avenues. Several wounded, including Americans, crossed the border to U S troops with reports of Dum Dum ammunition.
Death records include Daniel Floyd 67 of 401 Pollock Avenue and William C. Stoughton 56 of Peta Luna California. Also Bird Magee 29 of Plaingrove and Joseph Gebbia 11 months of 515 South Mill Street. Robert Ewing 36 of Wampum.
Casualties on the American side since the Juarez attack include killed men Vincente Pasedes R H Ferguson W D Chandler Antonio Garcia and wounded figures such as Mrs Joe Moorehead Edmund Heaton Louis Villalobos and Mrs Macdonia Garcia. Reports put American deaths around 12 with some lists listing up to 50. An insurgent command near "peace grove" was reported annihilated by federal shells.
Arrangements for the Epworth Methodist church Sunday school annual outing set for Friday June 30 at Rock Springs park. They will join the First Christian church Sunday school from the city for a large, enjoyable picnic expected to draw many attendees.
The colored man whose mangled remains were found last week along the railroad in Edenburg was buried Monday evening at 5 in Graceland cemetery. No identification or inquiries were received. It is believed the man rode a freight train and fell under its wheels.
Mary E Gill files trespass suit against Western Allegheny Railroad alleging tracks laid across a private lane cause damages. The action seeks compensation for harm and relief from the railroad's use of the lane.
Frank Fazzone and Joe Occhibone, aged eight or nine, were held for the June term in $300 bail after a morning hearing before Alderman Morrison on a horse and buggy theft charge. County Detective J. H. Breen identified them. another six year old joined but faced no charge. The boys claimed they just wanted a ride and the case may move to juvenile court amid ongoing schooling concerns.
The Pittsburg Hotel company chartered at Dover with $4.5 million capitalization plans Hotel Oliver a seven hundred room structure at Sixth Avenue and Smithfield Street in Pittsburgh. Backers include Gen. T. C. DuPont, Charles P Taft, and Frank M. Andrews of the Metropolitan Tower New York.
The Pennsylvania Railroad seeks to prevent shopmen in the Pittsburg district from organizing at Conway shops. Company representatives are stationed in yards and shops to hinder union organizers, as reported by railroaders.
Rev. C. S. Brooks pastor of the First Christian church along with Miss Ethel Rentz and Miss Nona Kepler attended the Western Pennsylvania Missionary convention in Beaver Falls. The event runs for three days.
The American Federation of Labor calls on union men to contribute 500000 for John J. McNamara’s defense, accusing a detective agency and the Los Angeles Manufacturers and Merchants Association of pressuring and blacklisting workers. Gompers and Morrison sign the appeal, denouncing the Burns agency and Gen Otis.
John Tomesik reveals his whereabouts after leaving Lizzie Korpa at the altar in South Sharon. He asks forgiveness and offers to marry her in Pittsburgh and start a life there if she agrees. Korpa refuses to go and will discuss with her father while friends urge caution.

Charles Scheffler of this city has purchased a large general store at Mineral Ridge Ohio. He exchanged his property here and has moved to Mineral Ridge to run the new business.
Workmen rush to erect a fence around the Mahoningtown shops and nearby trackage. It is unclear if all Pennsylvania railroad shops will be fenced, but New Castle shops remain active as talks for settlement proceed and direct impact on them seems unlikely.
Johyn Lockhart family on Richelieu avenue found pantry window and back door open at night. A small child's bank with six dollars and a pocketbook were stolen and later found on Walnut street. No clues to the burglars. several similar break ins reported citywide. police have little to go on.
E B McGill Wylie McCaslin and Jere Blucher join J Norman Martin T F Morehead and David Jameson to draft a plan of organization for the New Castle board of trade. The two committees, praised for excellence, will prepare a constitution and by laws and a mass meeting will organize members. A $1 000 000 guarantee fund is hoped to be raised to attract industry to New Castle.
