Former Mayor M L Hainer among Graselli plant disaster victims

Explosion at Graselli Powder plant at Covert's station near this city killed Jacob Thomas and fatally injured M L Hainer, and seriously injured James Duffy. Thomas 51, of 317 Phillips, was instantly killed. Hainer 47, of 313 Edgewood, died at Shenango Valley hospital. Duffy 40, of 515 Washington, suffered facial and head wounds and possible death from shock. The blast occurred in a steel blow case, entirely accidental, with minor material damage. Early reports say the blast was heard as far as East Palestine, Ohio. Funeral plans pending.

Last night at city hall the third Liberty Loan drive reported over 30 000 subscriptions totaling 4 453 100 dollars far above the 14 000 subscriptions and 1 737 900 dollar goal. Leaders praised workers amid praise for Morehead and Taft predicting more drives while mills and railroads contributed large blocks of subscriptions.

Jack Thomas Returns to City After Sea Service

Jack Thomas returns home after serving with the U S Navy on two Atlantic crossings delivering supplies for the Army. He shipped as a sailor and helped transport a shipload of mules. On a later voyage three Marines were sighted but driven off by the ship’s gun crew. He seeks induction into the ambulance corps.

Thomas Elliott Struck By Auto

Thomas Elliott of Wallace avenue was struck while crossing Washington street in front of the city treasurer’s office. He suffered a slight knee fracture and was taken home in an automobile. he should be able to move about in a few days unless complications arise.

Fire Destroys Cohen Shop and Two Greek Cafes on Moravia

A large blaze on Moravia Street badly damaged Henry Cohen's butcher shop and two adjoining Greek cafes. The fire started in the gables of the Cohen building around 2 PM, with two alarms sent as flames roared from the top floors. Furnishings were scattered from windows as water from two hose lines fought the flames. The fire is said to be sighted at 2.

Fly Red Cross Flags On Autos Begin May 20 Campaign

Auto owners are asked to display Red Cross service flags from now until the campaign ends May 20. Flags are available at Red Cross headquarters with 10 000 flags in local chapter rooms and merchants may borrow them for window trimming.

More Autos Needed To Transport Veterans For Draft

Attorney Walter S Reynolds chairs a committee seeking additional automobile owners to transport Civil War veterans accompanying draftees en route to camp next Friday. Draftees will depart from the court house with city men from the YMCA. Mahoningtown band will provide music as crowds gather for the sendoff at 7 30 p m over the Baltimore and Ohio line.

Roy Bell Dies in New Castle Hospital After Drunkenness

Police arrested a man who claimed the name Roy Bell after becoming severely intoxicated. He died at New Castle hospital at about 9 PM from acute alcoholism. No ID was found except a tattooed initials and a later note the body would be buried by the city if relatives are not found.

Vandals Wreck Slovak Cemetery

Vandals damaged the Holy Trinity Slovak cemetery at Sweyersville last night breaking off the heads of 30 tomb stones. Trees and shrubs were damaged and flower beds uprooted. No arrests have been made.
