Bataan Defenders Meet Tonight at Pittsburgh Convention

Major General Edward P King will speak at the fifth annual convention of the American Defenders of Halean and Corregidor in Pittsburgh. Mayor David L Lawrence proclaims Bataan and Corregidor Day as honorary commander King joins honored guests, including Gold Star parents, for the weekend program.

Oakland Auxiliary Business Meeting Delivers Prizes and Lunch

Members of the Oakland Sportsman's auxiliary met at Mrs. Frank Maleja’s home for the regular session. After the business, president led games with prizes to Mrs. Mike Peplowski and Mrs. Florence Stowreyk. Lunch was served with help from Mrs. Frank Jaworski. Next meeting June 7 at Mrs. Andrew Nevotne’s Elmwood street.

Fire at City Dump Destroys Sooty Sand Dust Pit

Firefighters were called to the Cascade street city dump at 31955 Friday where a pit of sand dust was found on fire. Fire Chief H F Steinbrink stated the blaze was contained with no further damage reported.

Moving a House and Spring Observances in the District

Workmen moved a structure on Lathrop after a neighbor freed a Youth with a saw and axe following a 45 minute hold. The week from Sunday is Mother's Day with banquets planned by Bible classes and organizations. A "ball of fire" sighting near Greenwood Park was reported. The Gratien Family thanks for kindness and flowers after bereavement.

Senate passes the foreign aid bill Friday, reducing total to about 2.65 billion for Marshall plan aid to Western Europe and adding 100 million for Korea. The House had made similar cuts, while Senate and House differ on technical aid for underdeveloped areas and program specifics. Two Injured in Auto Crash at Jameson Hospital

A motor crash left two injured and one child dead in a collision involving a beverage truck and a steel truck near a gas station. Jeasle Gibson Riley died at Jameson Memorial Hospital after a three week illness. Mrs. Riley, widow of Fred Riley, was 4 years old. The accident also injured others and prompted aggravated assault and battery charges against Louis R. Smith. Burial plans were made for the deceased at Oak Park Cemetery.

Longtime New Castle man died after service and burial

Melvin Mant of the Universal-Ganltary Hunt Finley Matthews and Du Manufacturing firm, now Wayne Hartzell Universal-Rundle, died after years of service and community leadership. Burial was in Oak Park, with funeral services at Leyde funeral home led by Rev. Jennings B. Reid. Survived by widow, sons John A. and Dean M., a brother Kenneth of Beaver, and a sister Frances. Community groups and the town mourn his loss.

Thieves Rob Cleveland Man After Paycheck Beating

In Cleveland two men robbed 34 year old Eula Arnett of his $115 weekly paycheck. They kicked him in the stomach before fleeing. The assailants taunted Arnett about his overtime and payday, illustrating a brutal robbery incident in the city.
