Allied forces in Korea push patrols into North Korean and Chinese lines as Lt. Gen. Ridgway predicts a costly communist renewed offensive. Ridgway returns to Japan after frontier visits as a lull settles over sectors.
White New Castle and nearby communities reported a severe hailstorm on Thursday evening with residents along Route 19 in Pittsburgh receiving the hardest blows. U S military police corporal Paul J. Gresens of Rochester New York was fatally shot by Soviet soldiers in the Vienna international sector as they challenged two stragglers near the Cafe Oriental. The incident prompted an official Soviet apology and a vow to aid in a citywide manhunt led by U S and Austrian authorities. Corporal Gresens was on patrol with Corporal Jack Morgan of Keokuk Iowa.
Price Controller DiSalle will keep beef price ceilings in place for now despite congressional pressure. Edward P. General MacArthur testified that the joint chiefs gave prior approval to his tactical and strategic maneuvers including the reconnaissance in force to the Yalu River. He spoke in reply to questions from Senator McMahon of Connecticut, a hard critic of the Far East policy.
