Secretary Ickes demands a six day work week for all controlled coal mines to boost wartime production. The rule covers both bituminous and anthracite mines under government control with time and a half paid for the sixth day. Management must seek exemptions if needed and justify them fully.
Harrisburg state police will step up enforcement of the 35 to 36 mile per hour speed limits as motorists largely ignore the rule. An emergency 85 mph limit remains in effect and Mother's Day observances are noted in tri city and county programs during the week.

CASPER WY May 4 Eight airmen from a Bell bomber crew were killed as the aircraft crashed on takeoff from Casper air base. Seven victims died in the crash and names were withheld pending notification of next of kin.
Secretary Knox announced a 25 percent rise in U S fleet strength since January with April deliveries surpassing 1000 combat planes and a record first four months for ship and aircraft production though noting potential material shortages. He cited four figure combat plane deliveries for the first time and highlighted gains in warships and auxiliaries and heightened Pacific air offensives.
Mrs. Robert L. Meermans of East Winter avenue returns from Cleveland where her mother Mrs. Seipel, of 15937 East 117th Street, confirms the death of Mr. Seipel two weeks ago. Funeral services for Mr. Seipel, who owned 83ade, were held April 24 at Ziem Funeral Home in Cleveland.

Washington May 4 The House cleared its decks for another vote on the Ruml Carlson tax plan with GOP leaders predicting adoption of the pay as you go measure. Support has grown among Republicans and a cross section of Democrats. alternatives include the Farand Robertson plan canceling 70 percent of the 1942 tax burden and a measure by Doughton.
Names of men sent to Pittsburgh for final examinations and certified back to Local Board One at New Castle for service in Army Navy and Marines. Harrisburg May 4 state officials vow strong measures to enforce the 35 mile per hour speed limit. Gov Edward Martin warns motorists have been disregarding the limit and average speeds are rising. stringent enforcement will begin immediately to curb violations.
A Reuters report quoted by the Dutch News Service said May 4 that Dutch patriots kidnapped the daughter of Arthur Seyss-Leyquart and are holding her as a hostage. The Netherlands occupation authority confirmed the claim.
The Church of the Nazarene holds its 36th Pittsburgh District Assembly and annual missionary convention in the city. Delegates and visitors, estimated at 350 to 400, gather for sessions at the First Baptist Church with Rev. Heinlein in charge and Dr. J. B. Chapman delivering the main address this evening at 7.
Rubber Director Willan M Jeffers today bluntly demanded the synthetic rubber program be carried out. He dismissed charges from Army and Navy officials that it impedes production of high octane gasoline and navy devices. He warned it would be a tragic error to reduce rubber output, defending the home front and Americans right to normal driving.
London May 4 Allied reports say Moroccan troops and French corps Danube made gains and pressed forward against Axis forces in Tunisia. Axis counter-attacks continued as Allied units held contact across other sectors of the shrinking front.
Allied forces advance toward Bizerte as heavy bombing by Boeing flying fortresses targets the harbor defenses. The advance continues after the rapid capture of Mateur, with German troops pushed back about ten miles south of Mateur and French and American forces linking with Patton’s corps for a broader push toward Lake Achmel.
Washington May 4. War Labor Board jurisdiction stands as the bottleneck in the coal wage crisis. Ickes said no promise or pledge was made to Lewis to secure a $2 a day wage increase or resumption of production. He noted negotiations occur under laws and regulations within the War Labor Board’s reach and that deadlock mirrors earlier times, miners have returned to work.
