Preparations Begin for Pymatuning Dam Project

Preparatory work starts on the Pymatuning dam site ahead of the main contract. Governor Pinchot plans to sign the $1 500 000 appropriation Thursday. Crews clear woodland and lay temporary roads as access improves, with the site about 45 miles from New Castle via Greenville and Jamestown. An auto graveyard near the route draws curiosity and Jamestown stands to gain temporary business from visitors.

Petition Seeks Paving of Ray Street by City

Attorney Frank Hover presented a petition to the council urging Ray Street between Croton Avenue and the current paving end be paved with concrete. The petition showed 719 front feet in favor of paving out of 1248 total, with all but three property owners signing.

Victor Olsen Construction Company began paving operations today to speed up city approved street improvements. Hundreds of workers gathered on Fairmont Avenue at six A M with shovels placed by seven. Excavation starts at Carlisle and Fairmont and will move eastward then shift to Laurel Avenue once complete.

Youngster Die In Barn Fire Heroes Lend Last Full Measure

In Tweed Ontario on May 4 a 14 year old, George Rashotte, rushed into a blazing barn to save his younger brothers William eight and Benjamin five. He perished as the boys were recovering from the flames. The tragedy occurred as the brothers used the second story as a playhouse and sleeping space. Their mother, away at the time, was overwhelmed by shock and later blinded. her condition was described as serious.

Employ 200 Men for State Highway Work For Next Two Weeks

Two hundred additional workers were added to the seventh ward branch payroll of the state highway department in Lawrence and Mercer counties. H W Lightner noted 106 hires in Lawrence and 100 in Mercer for work starting May 15 including hedge trimming and repairs to wood and stone structures as crews overhaul roadbeds. The East Cherry street bureau serves both counties and this hiring is a seasonal routine.

Temporary Macadam Road Planned Over Big Fill at Custard

District Engineer T. C. Frame announced a temporary roadway will be built over the Custard swamp fill on the Perry highway. About 250 000 cubic feet of earth have been dumped at an estimated cost of 100 000 dollars. Tappings will continue to check for underground streams as engineers assess safety and a permanent road unlikely for four years.
