Coalinga Quake Devastates Town with 60 Injured and Fires
A 6.5 magnitude quake hit Coalinga California causing brick structures to crumble and fires to rage. Bloodhound teams searched for victims as 60 people were injured and more than 150 buildings damaged or destroyed. No deaths reported. Governor Deukmejian declared the area a disaster.

Five Die Across Tornado Outbreak From Texas To New England
United Press International reports nearly 30 tornadoes across the nation from Texas to New Hampshire killed five people and left hundreds homeless. In Michigan Ohio and New York five deaths were confirmed, with Erie County Pennsylvania hit by a tornado that destroyed mobile homes in Summit Township near Erie. Officials said 18 to 25 trailer homes were uninhabitable and damage reached about half a million dollars to trailers plus a barn loss. The storm line prompted flash flood watches from Arkansas through Kentucky and Ohio to western New York, and hail up to three inches and gusts to 85 mph were reported. The death toll from four days of severe weather rose to 21 with new fatalities in New York.
