The Laurel Union School District 1960-61 budget faced delay after a request for extra funds for athletics stalled the approval. The plan includes a 10 mill property tax hike and a $3 monthly trailer tax.
John J. Brosky has been named manager of the New Castle plant of American Cyanamid Co. Announcement came from M. N. Gaboury. Brosky joined Cyanamid in 1947 as a development chemist and has held several posts at New Castle and Graf ton before becoming manager at New Castle. He is a Grove City College and Youngstown University graduate and a member of the American Chemical Society. The Brosky family will join him in Godfrey Illinois area soon.

Sirens whistled pedestrians off the streets as Pennsylvania took part in Operation Alert 1960 the first nationwide civil defense drill of the year. Public participation ran from 2 to 2 30 p.m. edt with sheltering and traffic halts occurring 2 15 to 2 27 p.m. and the all clear following.
Voters in Indiana Ohio DC Alabama and Florida cast ballots in a presidential primary cycle the Indiana race pitting Kennedy against Nixon dominates. Kennedy sought 34 delegates and Nixon 32 while Florida voters chose governors representatives and state officials. In Pittsburgh authorities held a 25 year old ex convict who admitted beating a Coraopolis grocer and her 71 year old mother during a robbery.
John M. Gurner Jr. 23, identified as the Butler killer who abducted two officers and fatally shot Dr. L Allen Smith and Ralph M Franklin. Fingerprint checks linked him to the crimes and he was killed after forcing officers to drive him in a police cruiser.
Scotland Lane sidewalk talks end without a final decision as the Union Citizens Council and the Board of Supervisors reach a tentative accord. A four foot wide path may be built after residents petition, with engineering costs to be shared by the township.
Radio and TV broadcasting halted at 2 p m for a Connetrad simulated emergency with brief remarks from President Eisenhower and Guy Lawrence. Local civil defense ran command post exercises solving attack scenarios and testing warning systems. Paper bomb drops were simulated in PA and other states. Critiques follow in May at Lehighton Selinsgrove and Kittanning.
President Eisenhower warned that major reductions in the 4.175 billion foreign aid program would trigger new international tensions and hurt national defense. He urged support for the aid bill amid opposition in Congress predicting substantial cuts while Senate action narrows options for funding.
The Independent Gas Workers Union struck Manufacturers Light and Heat Co. last night at midnight. About 60 of 250 members are local, and the strike was unanimous. Union president Frank Kline said negotiations in Pittsburgh led to a firm rejection of the company offer. The company will continue service to 85,000 customers in the review. No further bargaining talks are scheduled.
Three members of an Air Force C-123 cargo plane were killed when the aircraft exploded and crashed into a farm field near York Pennsylvania. The pilots were Capt. John H Winsberg Jr of Elizabethtown noted as flight test center chief, Capt Kenneth L Church of Middletown, an aerostructure engineer, and Walter Young of Lancaster, a civilian flight engineer. Surviving relatives were listed for each victim.

The council, by a 3-2 party line vote, rejected retiring James Mayberry as mercantile tax collector effective May 15. Judge Brown ruled Reynolds was not justified in abstaining last week. Brown and Marjorie Young won new four year terms. Brown was appointed in January and Young began April 1.
