Federal government sold three Amish work horses yesterday over Social Security tax issues. Buyer Mark Andio of Youngstown purchased the trio for 460 dollars at the J. R. Rick farm on Fairground Road RD 4.
A 13 year old boy identified as Anthony Madsen was held on a murder charge after the stabbing of Joan Fink 21 in her home. Investigators said he acted alone reporting an urge with no motive found. The body was discovered by Fink's sister in law with two young children nearby.
Harold Shaw of the Internal Revenue Service reports more sales possible if delinquent accounts remain unpaid. The sale of three horses owned by Mr and Mrs Valentine Y Byler raised 345 dollars after bidding by Rick and Andio, covering a 308.09 dollar lien from 1959 and costs. remaining balance may be refunded or covered by the government. About two dozen attended.
The City Council approved repayment of the last two $50 000 loans from Lawrence Savings and Trust Co. Interest of $750 was paid. Loans were made Jan 24 and Feb 13. City now has about $350 000 balance and has paid off $300 000 in temporary loans since October to bridge 1961 tax timing.
The Pennsylvania State Education Association rejects 15 recommendations from Gov. Lawrence's Education Study Committee while endorsing 11. It targets teacher salaries as the main issue, arguing for higher minimums and top scales and defending the current subsidy formula as key to equal educational opportunity.
A stocky gunman, boarding under a fictitious name, forced a National Airlines Convair from Miami to Key West to fly to Havana to warn Fidel Castro of an alleged assassination plot involving Rafael Trujillo. The pilot, Capt. F X Riley, returned to Miami after Cuban authorities detained the intruder.
The Lawrence County Bar Assn met with about 45 lawyers to elect officers and discuss changes to arbitration rules. James E. Chambers became president, Sherman K. Levine as vice president, and Edward M. Rea and Wilbert C. McKim Jr. re elected secretary and treasurer. The group endorsed a $2,000 arbitration cap, opposed a proposed state bill expanding legal practice during long terms, and scheduled a June 29 Pittsburgh baseball trip.
A 19 year old New Castle boy died and two companions were injured when their car chased by state police crashed into an embankment on Rt. 19 two miles north of Portersville Butler County. Driver Robert Reisker died at the scene from a broken neck after being thrown from the vehicle. Leslie Burns and David Kordish were treated for injuries. Burns faces a charge of permitting an intoxicated person to operate a vehicle. The incident followed a reported speeding in an erratic manner as officers attempted to stop the car. Further details from the investigation are noted.
The Supreme Court ruled 8 1 that rail workers may be laid off after a merger if properly compensated, reversing ICC practice of preserving jobs. Chief Justice Warren wrote the opinion noting 20 years of interpretation, while Justice Douglas dissented. The Fire Railroad and Delaware Lackawanna merger prompted the challenge from Railway Unions Executive Association.
CAPE CANAVERAL Fla UPI The United States postponed its first attempt to place a man in space for at least 48 hours to avoid risking prime astronaut Alan B Shepard Jr life by launching in cloudy conditions.
Partly cloudy and cooler with frost risk and highs in the 40s to 50s. Night temps in the 30s to upper 30s with frost. NASA canceled today’s launch due to persistent overcast, shifting the Mercury flight to Thursday. Shepard remains primary with Glenn as backup. Grisom named as a later alternative.
Charles Kennedy and Harold Duncaster were jailed on burglary counts after an attempted break-in at Isaly’s plant near New Wilmington and a car stop near the New Wilmington Auction Building. Lamson, the plant manager, identified tools in the suspects’ vehicle. A hearing is anticipated.
A housewife suffered an electric shock while reaching for steaks and her left hand touched an electric frying pan. Her husband Joseph Jaworski rushed to help, and both were burned by hot grease. Mrs Jaworski had second degree burns to her left hand and ankles while Mr Jaworski had first degree burns and minor hand lacerations. Both were treated at New Castle Hospital. Mrs Jaworski remained in good condition.
Preparation for the capsule and crew remains ready though a weather delay pushes the launch for a couple of days. The overcast, cool conditions around forty seven degrees hinder the planned ride as forecasts show clearer skies later.
