T A Kimes was unanimously re-elected for a three year term as superintendent of New Castle city schools. His salary increases from 2000 to 2400 dollars per year were approved. The board praised his management and they postponed the election date to May 2 after a late night regular session.
At 42 05 this morning the nomination was offered seconded and an unanimous vote followed with no opposition to Mr. Kimes. Prof Kimes served nine years as principal before being elected city superintendent and has completed six years in that role plus fifteen total years in official school district service. Captains of the teams organizing the First United Presbyterian church money raising campaign met Monday evening to assign helpers. Most captains have been named and teams are expected to be filled by next Tuesday when the next planning meeting occurs.
Clark D. Eckles, a well known newspaper man, has been appointed postmaster at Cambridge Springs. He is the son of Rev. John Eckles, a mid-time minister in the Erie M. E. conference. He learned the printing trade in the Conneautville Courier and has been connected with several newspapers in the northern end of the state.
Oscar Graham of Lehigh University South Bethlehem was named ivy orator for the class day exercises during commencement week. He also led the interclass track meet with three first-place finishes including hurdles and broad jump. Graham, a 1906 high school graduate, set athletic records in prior meets. Junior week closed with the university play The Widowers.
Thomas C. Lytle sues Loyal M. Hanna for 510000 claiming false arrest after a prior dismissal for lack of evidence. Layton case against Pennsylvania Co. ends with non suit for injuries from a falling casing. Igoe Bros sue John M. Hansen for about 10000 over nail machines left in the old tube mill. Judge Galbreath presides. court adjourned for a funeral.
Pittsburgh May 2 1877 strike seeps into the Pennsylvania system as 7000 to 10000 shopmen walk out to demand recognition by unions. Labor organizers Arthur Ireland and T H Flynn have been active since February amid reporter claims of union suppression and a shift to night work. Continued on Page Eight.
Columbus detectives arrested after offering bribes to Representative George B Nye. Nye swore warrants and claimed $100 payment to oppose a labor bill and aid an insurance bill. Speaker Vining disputed Nye taking funds. Burns operatives say they offered a $6000 jackpot and trapped about 16 legislators, recording conversations with a hidden dictaphone and couch hidden line.
Detective William J. Burns arrives in Columbus to supervise evidence for grand jury probes into widespread legislative boodling at the Ohio General Assembly. He says top officials are deeply corrupt and pledges a clean-up, while implicated members defend their actions as efforts to trap bribe-givers.
A private P. and L. E. train carried railroad officials between the city and Sharon on Monday. On Thursday a large Erie railroad delegation will run a special train for an inspection of the same route, prompting talk of imminent developments. Officials discussed the visits at P. and L. E. offices this morning.
John F. Dietz faces trial for the killing of Deputy Sheriff Oscar Harp on Thornapple river last October. He refuses lawyers saying a Milwaukee attorney offered his daughter $500 to commit perjury and asks the judge to allow a bench trial, which the judge declines.
James W. Daniels of Croton died Monday at 11 30 in Youngstown hospital from injuries after a wagon fall near Lowellville. He would have been 47 on May 8. Survived by mother, brother Jesse of Youngstown, sister Mrs Harriet Patton of Clarksburg WV. Funeral Thursday at 2 PM in Croton Avenue residence.
A Daughters of the King assembly will be held in this city in May with members from the Pittsburg diocese attending. A planning meeting for Trinity church will be held Wednesday at 7 30 p m to coordinate the event and gather attendees.
Death notices list Algernon C Jones of East Grant street Francesco Lambiase aged 36 of 20 South Cedar street and James W Daniels aged 47 of Croton avenue. No further details provided.
At a street committee meeting the city engineer's specifications for Atlantic avenue were approved. The contractor is required to complete the project within 120 days, or four months, under the contract terms.
Officials of Crescent Cement at Wampum report no settlement with strikers after a wage increase refusal. About 40 strikers met with no action taken. A second meeting is set for Wednesday as a committee may meet with management to resolve the dispute affecting roughly 350 workers, with over half out.
United Press reports frost forecasts for the lake regions, the Ohio valley, the mid-Atlantic and New England. Temperatures are expected to drop about 40 degrees in 24 hours with freezing conditions in New York and New England. Storm signals stretch along the Atlantic coast from Cape Hatteras north.
A report from Tim Juanma New Mexico says Captain Jack Mosby, son of Col. Mosby, a Civil War veteran and insurgent leader in Lower California, was fatally shot near Trent while attempting to hold up the Garrize stage. The driver fired, hitting him through the throat.
Algernon C. Jones 63 a longtime shoe firm member in the city died at his East Grant street home after a period of valvular heart trouble. He leaves wife Jennie Taggart two sons John of New Orleans and Frank, with interment at Greenwood Cemetery.
The annual meeting of Trinity parish was held Monday evening with reports from the rector Dr D E S Perry the secretary the treasurer and financial secretary and from various church organizations. All reports showed the church in excellent condition. C P Byers John S Wallace and E N Ohl were re elected vestrymen their terms having expired.
The regular monthly meeting of the Lawrence County Medical Association will be held Thursday evening at 8:30 in the Greer block rooms. Dr William Charles White of the Tuberculosis league will deliver the principal address.
At a Wampum council meeting on Monday evening a franchise was granted to the Beaver Valley and New Castle Street Railway company. The grant gives the right of way to cross the Darlington road and Clyde street in Wampum and allows the erection of overhead lines at the Darlington road crossing.
A Cleveland area man Al Derry colored faced arrest after attempting a hurried New Castle marriage to Adah Davis. A warrant for neglecting his three children and failure to support them led to his capture as he and his bride-to-be waited for a marriage license. He spent the night in county jail before the ceremony could proceed.
The coal strike era detective Sweeney, nicknamed Big Liz, arrived in the city today. He has led a detachment guarding coal company property in Pennsylvania and is linked to many past strike incidents here, including directing guard roles during attempts to run mills with nonunion workers.
