In Berlin on May Day thousands from West and East clashed with police. Western protestors hurled stones toward East German authorities around Potsdamer Platz as Allied troops and a US air force helicopter monitored the scene.
A rainy weekend ends in western Pennsylvania with hopes for pleasant spring weather. Rain totals about half an inch last night with showers continuing today. Tonight will bring partly cloudy skies and lows of 35 to 40. Tomorrow looks partly cloudy and milder per the forecast.
Over the weekend clocks were set from eastern standard to daylight saving time in New Castle and Lawrence County. A large crowd at the Neshannock township fire house Saturday evening caused firemen to direct traffic on the highway near the headquarters.
Mostly cloudy and cooler tonight with lows 35 to 40. Tomorrow partly cloudy with moderate temperatures. US weather stats for 24 hours to 9 am today show max 52 min 43 precip 0.15 inches and river stage 10.2 feet. For Sunday to 9 am, max 54 min 42 precip 0.30 inches.
Voters in Florida Alabama Ohio and Indiana go to polls Tuesday for primaries with four Senate seats 49 House seats and two governors at stake. In Florida and Alabama Democratic wins equal election while Ohio Indiana decide next November. President Truman features in Alabama and Florida issues.
Lt General Leslie R. Groves will address the Pennsylvania Society of Professional Engineers banquet in New Castle on May 20. The two day convention begins May 19 at the Castleton and is hosted by the Midwestern Chapter including Butler Lawrence Mercer Venango counties. Groves, vice president at Remington Rand, led WWII military construction and headed the Manhattan Project. He is retired with many decorations including the DSM and Legion of Merit.

Authorities seek to prevent violence amid public uproar and examined letters for potential handwriting matches.
Two year old Bill Angert was found dead in Connoquenessing Creek near Butler after disappearing last Thursday when he wandered from his mother washing clothes in the yard. Searchers recovered the body late yesterday.
A two car collision on the Sharon Greenville road killed Raymond Martin aged 30 and his three year old daughter Donna Mae of Reynolds village. Mrs Martin and two sons and five teenagers were hospitalized.
New York May 1 The 11 000 CIO Communications Workers of America strikers backed down returning to work as ordered by union leaders. Division Six announced settlement canceling 6 am picket lines in 43 states to prevent 240 000 other workers from missing shifts. Western Electric workers were expected to resume duties later today.
East Side residents saw rust streaks in the water today. J. Lepere Matthews, manager of the New Castle Water Company, said a 14 inch valve failed in the pump house Saturday night. The line was rerouted through lighter pressured lines, stirring up rust.
An Air Force B 25 bomber crashed into a Lebanon residential area killing six aboard and injuring three others. The crew included Col Richmond A Livingstone and Maj Donald H Bruner. The plane en route from Scott Field to Perrin Field exploded after hitting a tree, igniting several homes and a large gasoline fire.
Mike Di Thomas of rear 4 West Sutton street fled to a porch roof from a fire gutted the interior of his home causing an estimated 3500 in damage. Fire Chief H F Steinbrink said firemen rescued him after an alarm from box 85 summoned crews. Adjoining property was saved and the blaze was brought under control.
A mock coup in Mosinee Wisconsin led by a “Commissar” and five “Red” soldiers arrested Mayor Ralph Kronenwetter during a staged “one day of Communism.” The Wisconsin department of the American Legion organized a pageant to reveal life under totalitarian rule ending with a seizure of the town paper, churches, public buildings, and a concentration camp scene.
A Coraopolis housewife Vella Caponecchi 39 and her daughter Joan 14 died from food poisoning authorities say after a meal Wednesday. Her son August 13 was treated and released. The family’s remaining members did not eat the same food. Burial for the mother and daughter will be in Ellwood City.

Two women were killed and two others injured when their car collided with a bus in west Philadelphia. Victims were Ellen O Shea 65 and granddaughter Kathleen Carroll 23, both of Philadelphia. Injured were Mary Strouse 33 of Audubon New Jersey and James O Shea Jr. Philadelphia. Bus driver Ralph Graf suffered shock. sailors on board were not hurt.
Circuit Judge Ray Cowan called a special Jackson County grand jury to investigate Kansas City gambling. Two hundred names were drawn to select eighty jurors who report next Monday after Gov. Forrest Smith and Prosecuting Attorney Henry Fox Jr. urged a probe following a federal grand jury report noting 3.414 billion dollars in annual gambling and corruption links between gamblers and politicians.
In Tarentum Pennsylvania on May 1 a Springdale youth was in a coma at Allegheny Valley Hospital after his car fatally struck 60 year old Julia McCabe at a Glassmere bus stop. Driver Joseph Carney 26 and John Kaccer 21 of Springdale assisted McCabe before Carney fled. he later surrendered saying he had killed a woman and collapsed from hysteria.
London dock workers ended a 10 day walkout returning to their jobs. The government threatened firings for noncompliance and had troops unload about 1100 ships stalled by the strike, with some food rotting aboard before cargo handling resumed.
About 300000 Japanese gathered at Tokyo's Imperial plaza and near the palace for a Communist Socialist May Day rally opposing American policies in Japan. Speakers attacked war preparations and backed a resolution rejecting military bases for the United States in any peace settlement. They also critiqued the Dodge economic stabilization plan under Allied occupation.
Adm. Forrest P Sherman said the United States could match Russia in submarine numbers and performance if about 200 subs were reactivated from mothballs. Gen. J Lewton Collins warned Americans face atomic war fronts and 18 months to mobilize industry, echoed by Reps Mahon and Hindshaw.

Some buildings resumed service last night while most workers planned to return this morning.
