Fire swept a three story Cleveland tenement killing eight people and injuring ten others. Fire crews fought flames from 2:15 a.m. as authorities questioned a former tenant and another tenant under eviction. Council has 40,000 pledged from a 110,000 bond issue for the new station, with additional unspent balances and allocations planned to cover costs. Sale proceeds would pay architect James J. Stevenson and rebalance bond accounts.

X15 Rocket Plane Reaches Unofficial Altitude Record
Test pilot Joseph A. Walker flew the X15 to an unofficial world altitude of 31.25 miles 165000 feet at Edwards AFB California. He reported violent buffeting during a 35 degree dive and said he never experienced anything like it. Scientists were puzzled by the gusts and the flight was described as a cliff hanger from 80000 to 70000 feet. Walker could see the Pacific Coast from southern Oregon to northern Mexico.

Fire destroys Apollo business district in $500000 blaze
A major fire in Apollo Pennsylvania gutted the heart of the town, destroying the Apollo Trust Co and several shops, with damages estimated at more than $500000. Four firefighters were hospitalized and civilians treated for smoke inhalation as six volunteer companies fought the blaze for nearly four hours and power was out for hours before lights and service were restored.
