Federal officials rush a mine safety report as 400000 soft coal diggers plan a six day memorial shutdown for the Centralia disaster 111 victims. The Senate investigation headed by Senator Gordon of Oregon will visit Centralia midweek to consider possible legislation.

Discovery of the body of William Edward Cowden aged 81 of 1105 S Mercer street who had been missing since late Monday afternoon March 24 was made Saturday afternoon about 2 30 in a clump of rose bushes in the backyard at the residence of his sister in law Mrs Emily M Ayers of 535 E Long avenue Found by two neighborhood boys It is believed he stumbled into the bushes and died of exhaustion and exposure or that he may have suffered a heart attack He had gone from his son William F E Cowden Jr s home to his sister in laws and from there visited Long avenue He is believed to have been en route back to the Ayers home when he was stricken A heavy snowstorm came up Monday night and snow fell all day Tuesday
Rev Fr James P Harvey, former assistant pastor at Holy Family Latrobe, takes new duties as assistant pastor and spiritual director of the Young Ladies Sodality at St Marys church. Ordained 1929 in Latrobe, he has served 16 months there. He succeeds Rev Fr Ignatius Koller, now at St Bernard Indiana Pa.
Centralia and nearby communities observe a day of mourning for 111 miners killed by gas or fire in the Wamac mine disaster. Proclamations close businesses and schools as memorial services are held in Centralia Sandoval Central City and Wamac. Only 31 rescued.

State and Washington county police held a 19 year old youth for questioning in the death of 16 year old Lois Hope of Canonsburg. The body was found in a weed patch at McDonald after two older men were seen arguing with the victim in a tavern. Autopsy cited hemorrhage as the cause.
Marshal Tito assailed the western powers and U S Ambassador Patterson Jr in Belgrade as the UN Balkan commission opened its first public meeting. He charged Patterson with false information causing unfriendly relations and blamed Western states for unhelpful attitudes toward Yugoslav reparations demands on Italy and Austria.
San Francisco police sought a six foot tall woman robberner and a red haired woman about 45 for two separate gunpoint robberies on Saturday night. Joseph Michela and Angelo Costakos reported being throttled slugged and robbed of $6 and $66 respectively by the suspects in gray attire and red hair.
A four alarm fire swept the Central Bank in Chicago early today. Firemen fought the flames from outside due to dense smoke. A two story brick building housing the drive in motor bank, a Central Bank branch, also burned. The blaze likely started in a basement restaurant of the three story granite building.
The First Congregational Church on East Reynolds Street dedicated a new organ and chimes in a morning service led by Dr. Wilson P. Minton. Pastor Thomas J. Jones introduced Ivor V. Davis who unveiled the console, then Henry T. Jones handed the keys to Carl E. Turner as church leaders expressed gratitude for the instrument.

Frank H. Hall 65 of Milesburg, an inspector for Titan Metal Co, killed himself with a 16 gauge shotgun in Bellefonte while visiting his daughter Mrs William Thomas. Despondent since his wife’s death over two years ago, Coroner Charles Sheckler reported.
