The Ellerman liner Flaminian, a 5600 ton British freighter built in 1914, was torpedoed and sunk by a German submarine off the Scilly Islands while en route from Glasgow to Cape Town. Forty crewmen were landed at Holyhead after taking to lifeboats. the Finlandia rescued them. The ship carried a general cargo to South Africa and, with few or no passengers aboard, sank swiftly after the attack. The incident follows another British liner sunk within three days, with U-28 suspected in the attack.
